Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

This week my exposure program was with Gabriela. I have been looking forward to this week since I got my original schedule in January, partically because it would allow me to spend a whole week in my own bed in Manila, but also becuase it was intended to introduce me to the feminists in the country. Gabriela is an organization, like so many other activists groups in the Philippines, which was inspired into conception by the Marcos dictatorship and Martial Law. In 1984 the various women's organizations in the country, who where facing intimidation and violence for their organizing activitie [View Full Entry]

These Signs Never Cease to Entertain Me
I got lots of stares from Filipinos when I dropped my gigantic bag, dug out my camera and worked the settings around to take this picture. It was quite a production to take a photo of something I must... [more]
There are tons of things that make me laugh to myself here everyday. Considering that it is me sometimes I do actually laugh out loud - which sure makes people on the ever-busy streets look at me funny. Lots of the things I am seeing and experiencing in this first part of my internship are very emotional and upsetting, but at the same time there are also a lot of things that entertain the hell out of me in Manila. I though I would share some of them with you cats at home, so that you can enjoy the cultural learning [View Full Entry]

We can tell you now that Manila is not the place to be. There are no rich parts of Manila, just a mix of poor and even very poor parts. Though there are some better buildings, but they are few and mostly hidden away among the poor areas. You also have to keep a close eye on your wallet, anyone is guaranteed to try to rip you off. We did, however, meet an Australian who planned to see the Philippines from his newly bought motorcycle and he said "...not even the other Filipinos like Manila." so we're putting our hopes in [View Full Entry]

Beautiful white, palm fringed beaches....... Quaint traditional villages............... Clean cities..........................Was how we envisaged the 7106 islands of the Philippines to be, HOWEVER would could not have been further from the truth. In a few words the place can be descibed as Dirty, Politically Unstable, Polluted and a proper dog eat dog culture.!!!!! And with us being the extreme minority (white westerners) we stud out like a sore thumb and got hassled every where we went. Before leaving for the Philippines we carefully picked out our first hotel in Luzon, Close to th [View Full Entry]

Points if you get the Britney reference... I hear she is scheduling a world tour whhhhaaaat? So I am in Manila with Paul. It's amazing. I met his wonderful mom, Tess, and his father, who refers to himself as 'Mr. Chung' (which is apparently Paul's real last name... but they screwed it up on the passport). Paul is a baller here. His family owns a factory and has a private driver and everyone calls me 'Mam'. I stayed at a quite sketchy hostel Thursday morning, after having my red-eye flight delayed 3 hours. On Friday we toured the city with the [View Full Entry]

Riza and I spent the weekend getting things ready to leave for New Zealand. I bought some new hiking shoes and a cane. :) Never thought one would make those two purchases in the same day. I don't have much to say today, but I want to post something every day until we leave so that I get used to logging in and writing on this site on a daily basis. I already checked, and our hotel does have internet. So, my plan is to update you guys daily. I'm still learning how to use this blog, so let me know [View Full Entry]

Tinniest flurry EVER Asia » Philippines » Manila
I ate sigsig for the first time today at lunch. I was visiting a human rights group today that advocates for people who have experienced civil and political rights abuse by the government, and for lunch the officemates all chip in money and buy food from a local restaurant. This resulted in me sitting down to a feast of traditional Filipino food. Filipinos will tell you themselves that they love food and love feeding people, in fact the first word I learned in Tagalog was busog - full. So the employees where enjoying telling me all about what was in each [View Full Entry]

Today was one of the best days I have had since arriving in Manila. After having such an emotional week last week I spent my weekend doing frivilous things to de-stress. On Friday night I went to the movies and saw an american romantic comedy. There were many times during the show that I would laugh out loud only to realize that I was the only person in the theater laughing. After 2 weeks of always being slightly behind culturally, it was sort of nice to be the only person who got the culturally north american jokes in the movie. I [View Full Entry]

I learned last night that the community where I was staying last week experienced a saturation drive on Friday night. A saturation drive is a technique that was made famous in this country by the Marcos dictatorship. What happens I have been told is that early in the morning, usually just before or after dawn, numerous police and military personal raid the community. They round up all of the men, group them somewhere open and make them strip down to their underwear. The officials claim that they are looking for gang tattoos and know criminals. This is a pretext to arrest [View Full Entry]
