Background: The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separatists in the south.

Cleaningday Asia » Philippines » Davao
Saturday, the cleaning day. This morning we wake up really early with noise of children. Today it’s the big cleaning day were all the godchildren get their allowance. Some are here early because it’s the highlight of the week. Within a couple of hours it’s around 60 children sweeping and cleaning everything in the garden that needs to be removed. Some are more enthusiastic about it and some are disturbed by some white people. We was introduced to one of our godchildren; Jessie. He got his first allowance today and we could see he was proud. We are waiting to go [View Full Entry]

Hi, my name is Shibur and I am 9 years old. Today is my birthday and I can come home early today, before it’s dark. This morning, like every morning, I was waked up by my older sister. She are one of my 5 sisters and the second oldest of my sisters and brothers. My two brothers are younger than me. It’s starting to get bright during my early breakfast with rice. I have to be there before 6 am; otherwise I will miss the first busy workers. I ride with my older sister on our bike. She’s working at a [View Full Entry]

Hello everybody, at last we reach our destination in the Phillipines after an exhausting trip of 23 hours. In addition we (I) had to be in the air (over India) when Liverpool played against Real Madrid. So the first thing I did in Singapore airport was to check the result. And you can all guess that the trip further on went good. 4-0 ; would any of you believe that? So we landed on the international airport of Davao. The size like an average airport in Sweden. Four docs and one belt for luggage. Then the obligatory line for Passport, check [View Full Entry]

A long overdue blog about Davao City. I thought of myself as both a "local" and a tourist in the biggest city of the Philippines. I'm a frequent traveller to this city. Home of indigenous tribes and a melting pot of other locals. A vibrant city, spectacular landscape, as I pass through J.P. Laurel Avenue going to Victoria Plaza, on a clear day, the mountains are visible. The mountain side is visible on a clear day also from Paradise Island Resort in Samal Island and also from Times Beach in Matina. How do you feel like a "local' here? The people [View Full Entry]

Heyhey everyone!! All is well over here - arrived in the southern province of the Philippines on Sunday afternoon. We're at the Mindanao Peacebuilding Institute (MPI) until Friday. Here, I've been taking a class on Peace Advocacy and it's really interesting. I've truly met some amazing people from all over: Philippines, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, Figi, etc. There are even some officers and military personnel from the Filipine Army and even some of the rebel groups, Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF)!! So that's really interesting to get their opinion! So one aspect of the trip which [View Full Entry]

Davao del Norte is located in the south part of the Philippines in the island of Mindanao. Its one of the major tourism hub in the country offering many sights to visit including its beaches and seasides. The weather is just amazing quite sunny with a little bit of rain in the evening. I visited Pearl Farm beach resort located in the Samal Islands. It feels like being far away from everything. Although, the amenities provided many conveniences, the surrounding area feels like isolation. Perhaps it stems from the fact that their are fewer people but still the idea presents an [View Full Entry]

How do you picture paradise? We had a taste of it this year when we went to one of Davao's most beautiful resorts - the Pearl Farm. I had first learned about this place several years ago. In fact, I think I was in grade school back then. I remember seeing a beautiful picture of Ms. Margie Moran Floreindo, clad in a colorful muslim woman's dress (I hope I got that one right) on what seemed to be a raft afloat on the beach with a house on it . The water was blue and the background, I can vaguely [View Full Entry]

Tuesday morning Nino and I left early for a day trip to the Pearl Farm Resort on Samal Island. The boat left at 8am and took about 45 minutes, the resort is at the end of the island so it's a reasonably long trip considerng how close Samal Island is to Davao City (DC). Upon arriving we received a welcome drink of iced tea, we then claimed a outdoor Nippa hut to put our things and went for a swim, it was high tide and the water was very clean and refreshing. After swimming we played 8 ball in the games [View Full Entry]

Florita and I left for Davao on Saturday morning, Dicky's driver picked us up in Dicky's new car, he got it the day before and hadn't even ridden in it himself. The plane was due to depart at 10.30am however it was delayed and didn't leave until 12.45pm, only 2 hrs and 15 minutes late - not bad for PAL (Practically Always Late). It was an Airbus and pretty full probably due to the school holidays that have just started here. Tito (Uncle) Pal, Tita (Aunty) Amy and Joey met us at the airport. I went with Joey and on the [View Full Entry]
