Moalboal was our next beach-dive destination after Bantayan and Panglao. And boy, what a terrific place to dive and relax!
The city (22k citizens) is located southwest of Cebu, and we arrived there with a 3h bus. Moalboal is known for its great diving location, which we agree with (although in our specific case the Balicasag/Black Forest dive in Bohol was
better).
A few words about Moalboal. While it's a great place to dive, the accommodation options aren't amazing - there's decent diver's resorts which usually means rather-"ok" places, nothing much to expect. If all you want is a $5-10 place to stay it's great, but nothing fancy or anything. There's also no beach, just like it says in the old Lonely Planet. No beach = no beach.
We heard a strong recommendations to stay in a nearby place, on the adjacent White Beach (6km north to Moalboal), in a resort called
Club Serena. And good recommendation it was! For a fairly reasonable price you can land a stunning Tree house (see pics) - all for yourselves! It was an absolutely amazing place to stay for a few nights, especially considering it was by far the nicest places around the
area. To move around between the city, the dive spots and our resort we rented a motorbike which was a great way to explore the area, too.
The diving in Pescador Island, just 15 minutes boat ride from Moalboal, was just great. We went on the cheap option of Nelson's dive shop, PHP1,000 ($22) per dive, not-brand-new-BCDs but were awarded with a cool dive master (Benjie) and beautiful dives. In the second dive we spotted 4 (!) large turtles whose pictures you can see. We rented the dig.cam from our resort and it was worth every penny. All in all, the diving in the Philippines is a must and truly world-class. Moalboal delivers on that promise.
Three fantastic nights we stayed in Moalboal, before moving to our last destination in the Philippines: Boracay. We're not sure how it's going to be - Boracay being the
Mecca of Western pilgrims to the Philippines. We're hoping our good luck with this terrific country would continue also there. Boracay, here we come.
