Raj took us on a weird day of sight seeing in Pokhara. It was 5 or 6 places and 10 to 15 minutes at each place with the exception of the Gorkha Museum which took us hours to get through. We started at a large waterfall which was renamed Devi Falls in the 1970s when a European woman drown while taking a shower. It took so much time and cost to look for the body they remained it after her. After we went to the caves which has the river from the falls flowing through it. It was very deep and had a Hindi temple inside. This was followed up by the hydropower damn that provides electricity to over 400,000 people. They had massive flooding in the early 1990s and the water rose 26 meters in ... read more

Woke up today still feeling pretty sick. Raj gave me three options: stay put for a day and hope I feel better tomorrow, take the public bus back to the city (2 hours on rock filled roads, with potholes large enough to put a person in, and lots of jostles/turns), or hike out. Since staying in the room felt like a cell and not having control of when to get off the bus both felt like death, hike out was all that remained. We packed up and were on the trail by 8:30. The majority of today was downhil again which did numbers on my belly. The meds helped, but after 45 minutes, I really felt the lack of food in my system and my pace slowed way down as Raj sprang down the hill and ... read more

Happy Birthday to me in a not so happy way. I woke up around midnight feeling hot, cold sweats and like my insides were going to explode. For the rest of the night, I alternated between sleeping for 30 minutes, running to the bathroom, and putting on and taking off clothes as my body temp fluctuated. In the morning I was not top par and my breakfast was runny porridge which was no help to me. After some emergency meds, it was time to take off. It was a painful 30 minute start to the day with it being all uphill essentially Poon Hill minus 200 feet. But by the time, we reach the half way point of the climb, meds were kicking in and I felt like I had some control of my body again. ... read more

We discovered that Raj had ESP. One of the main attractions of this hike is to make it to the top of Poon Hill at sunrise. This requires hikers to leave their guesthouse at 4:30 AM hike at one of the coldest parts of day to make it to the top by sunrise. Raj said he thinks we’d much prefer sunset if it is clear tonight because the colors are better in his opinion, we do not have to get up early and we will be more warm. ALL THREE are spot on especially not wanting to get up early. Mind you, each day we will be up by 7 AM hiking by 8, but those extra 2 and a half hours are vital. All day we hiked with the hope of clear skies and getting ... read more

Going into the hike I knew: we’d climb approximately 2400 m in elevation, peak out around 3200 m, it’d take 4-5 days and have the option of a porter. What I didn’t know: most of the trail is used by communities in the mountains and they didn’t have roads. The only way to get supplies is by human porters or mule. They accommodate to rain and provide good surfaces to the mules by building thousands of stairs made from rock hauled from the river; our porter weighed maybe 120 and demanded to take our bags. The first day was physically challenging but doable (thanks Kevin for implementing an 18 month squat plan). What took more work was swallowing my pride which weighs 1,000 tons, by letting someone carry my gear when I am capable. Utsab, our ... read more

After a 7 hour bus ride, including 2 stops for food and 2 stops for a toilet break, we arrived in Pokhara. From here, the hiking adventure will begin. Pokhara had a different feel to it than Kathmandu. It is right by a lake and has one main road near us that runs along side it. The shore line stores almost follow a pattern of tourist shops: hiking gear/clothing, art, jewelry, tours, trinkets, hiking gear/clothing, insert random restaurant and coffee cafe...repeat. There is a park with a soccer field constantly in action and traffic is not so crazy that a random cow or two can‘t meander down the street looking for a snack. Our night consisted of roaming the back roads which really led more to the center of town (apparently the tourist stretch is on ... read more

Today we were given a tour of 3 of the 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu. Our guide was so knowledgeable on both the history of the land and how it connected back to Nepalese culture. In order to not fully butcher all the information he provided, here are my favorite pieces that I took from each site: Bhaktapur Durbar Square: Nyatapola Temple is a representation to women's wisdom and is a 5 story Hindu temple built from 1702 to 1703. It has survived all earthquakes in Nepal since with minimal damage (even the 1934 earthquake which destroyed 1/3 of the temples in Bhaktapur Durbar Square). There are 5 levels to the temple each protected by a guardian ten times stronger than the guardian below it. This area is famous for its wood carvings in ... read more

Even though we arrived in Kathmandu this evening, I am going start with the significance of the boda boda in Uganda. The boda boda is between a 50 and 300 cc motorcycle and is typical means of public transport in Uganda. There are buses, but they only go city to city and taxis and private cars are expensive. There are boda stages on almost every corner or you stand by the road side and one will pull over. Prices are negotiable depending on what you are transporting, how many you are transporting and how far you are going. There is now even a trend of Safe Boda where the driver is vetted by a company, you can contact them using an app and they must provide the passenger a helmet and obey all traffic laws. Sounds ... read more

The Sunderjal Chisapani Nagarcott trek. I had knowingly let things a bit loose on this trip. My intention was always to go with more than one other person in addition to the guide. This would have given encouragement from fellow travellers and made the exercise to come within the budget. Unfortunately Bimal (the manager at the hotel) dragged on the issue too long and there were no others to go with me. To compound that our guide did not turn up till 10AM and it was 11 AM before started the drive to Sunnderijal. With traffic and road conditions it took longer than 1 hour. So it was well over mid day when we started on the trek. Our estimate was that it will take approximately 6 hours for the trek and we will be in ... read more

Thamel and Chandragiri Hills. I had no problem when I get back to the hotel. Just tired a bit, and after a shower decided to take a lie down and rest which was a mistake. I fell asleep and. When I got up after a couple of hours had to struggle even to get out of bed. Just severe aches mainly on the calf muscles. It was evident that I am paying for lack of training. In a way I was lucky that the pain was setting in only now. Had it hit earlier it would have been necessary to carry me down. Realizing the condition I decided to walk it off, starting very slowly. Within 15 minutes it eased a fair bit band I was able to manage to move more freely. I met Pat ... read more
