In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

Simply Happy

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
Dust in my eyes, nasal drip into my throat, and an unsettling feeling in my gut that comes and goes, these have become minute annoyences that may have bothered me two weeks ago, but now I am redirected to focus on the many beautiful aspects of this amazing place. I am becoming more and more familiar with my surroundings as each day passes, and am beginning to enjoy the endless chaos and madness that is Kathmandu. The next 15 days marks one of Nepal's most important festivals of the year, Dashain. People travel many miles to reunite with families, businesses close, [View Full Entry]

Well here we are folks!!! At the end of another tour...today is our last day in Nepal, and again, we will have to politely request that you park it and get a snack..and maybe something to drink, cuz this is gunna be another long one...perhaps even longer then last time!!! I should first start by properly concluding our final days in India. We had 4 days free in Delhi (and this was less then a week after a bomb went off within 1km of our hotel) so needless to say, the two of us were in a bit of a hurry [View Full Entry]

Our greeting as Pieter and I arrived in Pokhara
It's been a minute since I've written so I have to stretch my memory a tad to the days in Pokhara before I left for my trek through the Annapurna region of the Himalaya. After a sometime difficult experience in Kathmandu, Pokhara felt like the Nepal I had come here for. Hardly any honking taxi drivers, absolutely no rickshaws, few begging children, even fewer homeless children - it was a nice relief from the toils of larger Asian cities. With the beautiful backdrop of the Annapurnas and lakeside guesthouses, Pokhara seemed the place to be. We rented a paddle boat and [View Full Entry]

Day 1

Saturday, October 04, 2008. 3 Sisters Guest House, Pokhara, Nepal. In the last few days with the Bankars, we visited some incredible caves carved over a thousand years ago, and drove to Mumbai for a day, both of which I posted pictures of in the previous blog. My camera stopped working at the caves, but luckily I had gotten another one very cheap before we left so I had a backup. I could write several pages on both those trips, but for your sake, I decided not to overwhelm you and I thought pictures would be enough. Also I thought it [View Full Entry]

She wasn't so happy when I didnt want to give her money so I caved in the end. I was worth it.
Nepal was a good break from India but it was during the rainy season so I didn't get to see much of the mountains. I crossed the border and booked a bus to Pokhara in hopes of doing some hiking on the Annapurna Range, it was there I met these 7 Indian guys who insisted on taking me with them in the bus they had rented. I tried to tell them I had bought a bus ticket but they would not give up. In the end they ripped up my bus ticket, having no other option I joined them on the [View Full Entry]

Doesburg to Kathmandu

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
Starting at the station in Arnhem (many thanks dad!), we boarded the nice smooth ICE train to Dusseldorf. Getting into he right carriage (No. 24) was no problem - finding seats 111 & 113 was! Try walking the train one end to the other with it travelling 152km/hr and with backpacks on your back!!! Just like Jan always says "You never get lost when you're with me, you just see a lot more!" I missed the seats first round and didn't bother looking at the seat numbers the second two rounds until Jan stopped at a pair of seats and said [View Full Entry]

First Impressions

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
So I finally arrived in Kathmandu and I'm super excited to be here. I ended up being about 3 hours later than expected, but that wasn't much of a surprise. The last part of my journey wasn't too bad though because I was randomly upgraded to Executive Class so I was able to do 2 hours of waiting in the lounge, which was well equipped with couches and free food. Had some tasty cashew samosas and an hour long nap. The flight was pretty comfortable too so it was a nice way to end off the long trip. So here are [View Full Entry]
