In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

A Chaos Theory

 Asia » Nepal
After having spent the last three months in tropical heat and humidity depriving myself of any frivolous comforts, especially the freon induced bliss of A/C, I landed in northern India and it was 69 degrees. It was like stepping into a completely air conditioned sub-continent. Even through my delirium at four in the morning after a full night of flying and airport change overs this contrast was worthy of stopping to appreciate. I entered my hotel room, piled on the blankets, turned the fan on and pretended it was winter. It was the best nights sleep i've had in months. Which [View Full Entry]

Everest Base Camp trek

 Asia » Nepal
So were finally starting the Everest Base Camp trek - but I manage to hide my excitement on the way to Kathmandu airport as it’s only 4.30 in the morning and my spirits are still subdued as when we arrive at the airport - it’s closed, not a good start. Eventually the airport opens and after a short debate with custom officials who were after a quick backhander, Suzanne, myself and our guide, Panoy (a.k.a. Bob as we couldn’t pronounce his name properly just yet), are shown to our wee puddle jumper - or in this case hopefully our mountain jumper [View Full Entry]

Hello Mums and everyone else, apologies for the delay in updates but we have just returned from a two week trek to Mount Everest base camp in Nepal, which by the way was fantastic, however as we've just found a reasonable internet café I'm going to try and catch up as much as possible and get the blog organized, especially as I just found an unsent blog I forgot to send from Australia so I hope you're all sitting comfy as I there should be a few stories to follow… Enjoy... Namaste from Nepal! After spending almost a month in Nepal we were sorry to leave this friendly country with its friendly people, fascinating mountains and excellent cuisine. As many people nowadays we had some concerns about the safety before we arrived but it turned out quickly that press exaggerated the situation. We have never experienced hostility towards foreigners, quite the opposite, everybody was very friendly and helpful. Our first week has gone very quickly, we were busy with teaching English in the local private school. We contacted Volunteer Society Nepal -VSN through the i [View Full Entry]

This fairly recent stupa looks magnificent on a hill above Pokhara.
I slept badly that night, partly due to the pounding rain, and partly due to the hope that it would stop (and, of course, the everpresent crappy mattress situation). I woke up at midnight, and again around 1:30 (among other times), and remarked with dismay that it was still raining. When 4:45 arrived, and it was time for us to begin our walk to Poon hill to collect our prize (a spectacular view of the Annapurnas and Dhauligiri) we didn't even bother getting out of bed. The rain had not subsided one bit. We were presented with the choice of hanging [View Full Entry]

This was my reward for hiking 10 hours.
Nepal is full of two things, Mountains and misconceptions. Sorry for the people I met traveling in India and who wished to go to Nepal but didn't for reasons read in the news. True, everyday I spent in Nepal included reading a newspaper filled with Maoist related violence and killings. Uncomfortable to see bunkers, barb wires and all manner of guns slung over the shoulders of young police and army. But the glut of rooms and absence of people on the trails was a bit more disquieting. Confirmed on my flight out of Kathmandu which was full to the brim with [View Full Entry]

The menus in the Annapurna trail restaurants all seem to have been copied from Protocols of the Elder Trekkers of Annapurna guide, as they are all pretty much identical, save for the prices, which seem to vary in proportion to altitude and remoteness. They have standard Nepali fare like Dal Baht (lentils with rice), Tibetan specialties like Tibetan bread, breakfast food like pancakes, omlettes, porridge, and spaghetti, lasagne, pizza, Indian food, potatoes, fried rice, chow mein, and even a handful of Mexican options. Sounds like a pretty good variety, but, I assure you, after a week on the [View Full Entry]

Hi there, Friends! Sorry for the long delay. The access road of the information superhighway hasn't managed to penetrate the rugged mountain passes of the Himalayas just yet, so this posting has languished in my primitive offline word processor called a "note book" or some such. Apparently, these were once used extensively for composing. Anyway, I'm going to break this up into two or three installments, to make it a bit more readable. On the morning of Thursday, March second, Eddie, Michelle and I set off for Pokhara by airplane. The linear distance is no more than 120 miles. One [View Full Entry]
