In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

The menus in the Annapurna trail restaurants all seem to have been copied from Protocols of the Elder Trekkers of Annapurna guide, as they are all pretty much identical, save for the prices, which seem to vary in proportion to altitude and remoteness. They have standard Nepali fare like Dal Baht (lentils with rice), Tibetan specialties like Tibetan bread, breakfast food like pancakes, omlettes, porridge, and spaghetti, lasagne, pizza, Indian food, potatoes, fried rice, chow mein, and even a handful of Mexican options. Sounds like a pretty good variety, but, I assure you, after a week on the [View Full Entry]

Hi there, Friends! Sorry for the long delay. The access road of the information superhighway hasn't managed to penetrate the rugged mountain passes of the Himalayas just yet, so this posting has languished in my primitive offline word processor called a "note book" or some such. Apparently, these were once used extensively for composing. Anyway, I'm going to break this up into two or three installments, to make it a bit more readable. On the morning of Thursday, March second, Eddie, Michelle and I set off for Pokhara by airplane. The linear distance is no more than 120 miles. One [View Full Entry]

Kathmandu is definitely a kind of sensory overload. I imagine the experience will be repeated in most of the overcrowded, underorganized cities of South Asia, but this is where I will have to become accustomed to it. Chayna (pronounced like the country that produced Mao Zedong), the title of this entry, is the Nepali word for "no" and has myriad applications. For the past two days, Eddie and I have toured the city with Michelle, Eddie's girlfriend who has been here for two weeks, and a local guide assigned to help us out by Michelle's Nepali friend. Although the guides are [View Full Entry]

Well, I made it. This is going to be brief, as it is getting a bit late here, but I wanted to let everybody know that I made it here in one piece. Believe it or not, the three flights I took to get here were very bearable. I stayed up all night packing, so I had no problem sleeping on the first leg. The Heathrow to Abu Dhabi flight was completely abandoned, so I had a bed consisting of the four middle seats. I took off from Newark, and flew right past a toy-model Manhattan. It seemed to say "do [View Full Entry]

Varanasi to Kathmandu

Varanasi to Kathmandu Well its catch up time again if I can remember the last time I wrote we were heading towards Kathmandu, Nepal. The first step of the trip was to catch a train from Varanasi to Gorakhpur, once again the train ride was pretty much as before but this time we didn’t have to get a sleeper as the train journey was a mere 6 hours - oh joy… So we arrive at Gorakhpur to spend the night and to say “culture shock” would be an understatement. We had previously met another couple heading towards Kathmandu at the train [View Full Entry]

Kathmandu Five Years Later

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
Back to the bucket bath for my first few days in Kathmandu, staying with friends in Swayambunath. It is shocking how little Kathmandu has changed. The dusty streets seemed dustier after five years and the smog thicker. But no signs of progress or care for the city and its people from the king. A sad state of affairs. Yet there are a host of creature comforts for those who can afford it. After the fall in relative isolation in Xining, I indulge with friends in shopping for pashmina shawls, visiting the foot massage ladies, and seeking out the requisite pizza fix [View Full Entry]

My life in a buddhist monastery

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Hi wonderful friends and family! Here's a bit of an insight into my life as ''Miss'', the English teacher at a buddhist monastery. There's more to tell about my other Nepali experiences, but I'll send another email to keep it digestible. Photos to come, also. Thanks for your birthday wishes. The big 2-5 came without much of a bang, unfortunately, and all day I wished I was at home by the barbie with my mates, followed by a dance-a-thon of a night on the town. I was on a bus for half of the day, but managed to get in a [View Full Entry]
