In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

I've done it so you don't have to!
left kathmandu, a place that was such a welcome break to me from the relentlesness of india! and made my way to pokhara, a six hour bus ride west of kathmandu, or so they say! it actully took 9 hours because of a accident that killed a child, so the village people blocked the road until they got compensation! i love the way this country works, want something doing, make a fuss! met up with laura in pokhara, also met up with a mate from india who had just finished a 16 day trek! so i spent only one night in [View Full Entry]

Lobuche

Asia » Nepal » Gorak Shep
** Entry completed 28 Nov 2006 ** There were no fleas in Lobuche thank god. Only rats. The group anticipates Base Camp tomorrow. It is obvious from everyoness face that people are worried. I feel ok and optimistic despite the 12 hour day ahead of me. We have been breifed that we will head out at 6am. Lobouche is very cold. The cloud is coming up the valley bringing with it the damp. A few of us went up to the edge of the Khumbu Glacier. Most of it was grey glacial till (rock debris). Now and again we caught a [View Full Entry]

**Entry completed 28 Nov 2006** We trekking up to around 4900m today. So much for the rest. I was pleased that my knee held out and my breathing has improved. There are still members of the group which permanently feel out of breath. A number of people continue theirown risky quests and gain no respect from the rest of the group. To run of these mountains (even for a short time), show symptoms of AMS and continue to push yourself beyond medical advice should attract nothing lesss than failure. Another member goes out alone into the freezing cloud. No map, no [View Full Entry]

Tashi Delek Lodge at Tengboche
We started out this morning travelling along frosty bitten paths, in the shadow of Everest. Everest shows itself intermittently as we travel towards our goal of Base Camp. The trail is quieter now and sherpas and yaks are fewer. Last night Rolfe (group leader and accomplished mountaineer) told us the heart rendering story of a sherpa which encapsulates their spirt. One Sherpa who got to the end of his day and asked if he could travel to Kathmandu to get medicine for his daughter who had Scepticima (she was a two day run away). Later Rolfe sawthe same sherpa again and [View Full Entry]

Rhinos? In Kathmandu?
You bet. This fetus has been preserved in a lovely coverless jar of formaldahyde in the Natural History Museum for nearly 10 years! Do you believe it?!? Easily the coolest thing Sara has ever seen.... [more]
In Kathmandu for the second time now, with a trip to Chitwan National Park inbetween. Our first encounter with this country was a crazy, dusty one. Crossing the border we had to run around looking for passport photos, even though the travel agent in Delhi said you didn't need them for a Nepali visa. Then they would only take US dollars for the visa, so we had to run around again looking for an exchange rate that was not totally obscene, which, it turns out, was impossible to do. Anyway, we reloaded the bus for the last 8 hour leg of [View Full Entry]

Trekking in the Himalayas

 Asia » Nepal » Annapurna
We did a 16 day trek of the Annapurna circuit and it was an absolutely staggering experience. Because we started on the 17th of November and it is beginning to get quite cold at the higher altitudes, we had missed the masses and many days it just felt that we were the only ones on the trail.....Great. A new law passed just on the 27th of Oct this year, means that it is now compulsary to bring a guide or a porter with you. We had Mila, a porter/guide who spoke reasonable english and carried our heavy stuff. We began the [View Full Entry]

Finally Arrived in Kathmandu First impressions of Kathamdu were much better than expected and we quickly managed to find a nice hotel in Thamel. We were harassed by Nepalese Taxi drivers on the way out of the airport, after much dispute we finally agreed a price and set off. This was no ordinary journey though, on the way after stopping off at an ATM a young boy begging came to Danny's side of the taxi and opened the sliding window. Dan was a little worried as he was counting his money so tried to slide the window and stop the [View Full Entry]

Een week PArsauni.

 Asia » Nepal » Chitwan
Parsauni 2 Weblog 17 november 2006. In haar [View Full Entry]

Snow

 Asia » Nepal » Tengboche
Turns out there is now a internet station in Tengboche. We've just arrived. It was a steep climb, but again I was using my tried and tested small steps. (I'm in no rush) I feel good and am in good health keeping up my water regime when others are slipping. I'm a bit of a stickler for keeping to my own set of rules :) We arrived in cloud cover. A few flakes of snow. Just when we were wondering whether that mountain was going to end, we turned the corner there stood the monastry. Everything is calm and the bleakness [View Full Entry]
