Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

Team Tayto in Nepal!

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Well well, don't know where to begin...it's been ages since the last entry here....so much has happened....guesss i'll try to fill in the gaps from then til now: From Dharmasala Em&i took a bus ride to Rishikesh to do some white water rafting and maybe some yoga; we did the rafting which was great fun on some class 3 rapids but who the hell wants to do yoga in 45+ heat in a congested&smelly town??? After a couple of days we left Rishikesh and headed for Delhi to await Em's sister Nikki's arrival from Ireland. Can't say we found much to [View Full Entry]

Lazy Days in Pokhara

Pokhara was so pretty it was a shame we could not do the Annapurna. But we'll be back...
Having a touch of the three-month-itis after being on the go so long, and especially after the madness in China and Tibet we decided that a few lazy days in Pokhara was just what we needed. It also helped that we'd both had some tummy troubles, so some long sleeps, afternoon naps and lots of good books made for a happy recovery. Pokhara is a lot more laid back than Kathmandu and it was a nice chage from being so on the go, whether it be sightseeing, travelling or trying to get chores done. We found a neat little restaurant where [View Full Entry]

First, I should apologise for the last blog and its length - it's interesting to see how a fifth of the readers dropped off before reading Part II; I don't blame them, especially when Part II had no photos. This time, I've deliberately made it refreshingly shorter. I feel much better now - stupidly, as soon as I got back I was already missing the clean air, tranquility, cooler (!) climate and views. I guess it's human nature that we always want what we don't have - or are simply fickle! One of the first things I had when I got [View Full Entry]

Kasko Jit (Who won)??? Jantako (The people did)!!!! Today is a wonderful day to be in Nepal, revelling in the jubilation of throngs of civilians who have poured through the city streets. They have won a people's war against King Gynendra, who last night (April 24) at 11.30pm, gave into the demands of the agitating Seven Party Alliance, and announced a democratic parliament would be reinstated by Friday (April 28). The king's third attempt at abating the people's movement since the alliance's nationwide strike was imposed more than 2 weeks ago, came at literally the 11th hour. The [View Full Entry]

So far...

Apologies for being so abysmal on the email front. I've no excuse so I won't try and make one up. We're in Pokhara in Nepal at the moment, everything has come to a standstill here. A four day strike has been extended and there's a curfew imposed for most of the day. This is the third time we've been caught in a strike here. We're hoping it'll peter out soon. The King, who is the root of the problem, is due to make a speech on Friday so hopefully something fruitful will come of that. So we're just chilling at the [View Full Entry]

ein doedliches erlebnis

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara

Hi there, Friends! Sorry for the long delay. The access road of the information superhighway hasn't managed to penetrate the rugged mountain passes of the Himalayas just yet, so this posting has languished in my primitive offline word processor called a "note book" or some such. Apparently, these were once used extensively for composing. Anyway, I'm going to break this up into two or three installments, to make it a bit more readable. On the morning of Thursday, March second, Eddie, Michelle and I set off for Pokhara by airplane. The linear distance is no more than 120 miles. One [View Full Entry]

My life in a buddhist monastery

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Hi wonderful friends and family! Here's a bit of an insight into my life as ''Miss'', the English teacher at a buddhist monastery. There's more to tell about my other Nepali experiences, but I'll send another email to keep it digestible. Photos to come, also. Thanks for your birthday wishes. The big 2-5 came without much of a bang, unfortunately, and all day I wished I was at home by the barbie with my mates, followed by a dance-a-thon of a night on the town. I was on a bus for half of the day, but managed to get in a [View Full Entry]

we stayed at the village in the middle bottom of this frame. it's 500m down from where this was taken (part of the 1300m uphill day)
We've been back in Pokhara for a few days now since completing our second trek. The trek overall was fairly uneventful (thank goodness), apart from beautiful views and myself catching a nasty bout of something (not sure what it was) on New Year's Eve. As with Christmas Eve, I spent New Year's throwing up (YAY) -- though this was a little more violent and more persistent than the antibiotic & alcohol induced Christmas episode... Fortunately it settled down within 12 hours and I was able to keep down some antibiotics the following afternoon which cleared it up overnight. Of note from [View Full Entry]
