Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

Horrible bus ride

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Towards the Mountains Asia trip 2007We are now in Pokhara about 200km's east of Katmandu, and the bus ride took over seven hours, in no small part due to the incredibly winding road, the mass traffic, the freightening cliffs, and smelly fumes, no air conditioning, Horrible, like the title of this entry says! to top it off mid way I realized I left the camera battery charger and spare battery plugged into the wall of our last hotel in Katmandu, Hopefully the last bonehead move I'll be making! luckily we had a day in [View Full Entry]

Imagine if you will - one Aussie, one Kiwi, three Polish, four Indians, a handful of Tibetans, five dozen Nepalese, some caged pigeons, a musical busker, eight sacks of rice, insane amounts of personal baggage, and forty crates of fruit and vegetables all crammed into (and on top of) a forty seater bus. Welcome to the public buses in Nepal! From the Indian border to Pokhara it took nearly twelve hours (another overnighter!) to make the 100km trip, along narrow roads that wound steeply through the hills. The bus stopped constantly to load and unload supplies, pick up and drop off [View Full Entry]

I'm off tomorrow to start the Annapurna circuit trek which should take somewhere between 16 and 20 days. During this time I'm pretty sure I won't have access to the outside world, so just in case anyone is trying to e-mail/text me I'm not ignoring you! Which reminds me - I haven't been able to use my mobile in Nepal since I got here, so if anyone has texted me over the last couple of weeks I won't have received it. Also I don't think my phone will be functioning again until I get back into the UK on the 25th [View Full Entry]

Rafting and jungle

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Still having a fantastic time in Nepal. Just got to Pokara today from Chitwan National Park. We had a good time there, elephant riding, saw rhinos, peacocks, crokodile and more. From Katmandu we went on a two day rafting down to near by Chitwan. It was so much fun. I'd never gone rafting before and really thought l would die but it wasn't that hard. We stayed overnight on the riverbank in a tent, sang Icelandic and Nepali songs around a campfire. It was the best. Now we're gonna stay a few days in Pokhara and then head back for India. Rainy day blues

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
I arrived into Pokhara after a decent 8 hour bus ride. After my failed attempt at waking up for the 7 a.m. bus the previous morning, I was proud that I not only woke up, but got there 30 minutes early and had a nice breakfast! :) hahaa.. I'm such a lazy ass. On the bus, I met an Australian, Egor, and several Israelis. Egor and I ended up becoming roommates at Nanohano Guesthouse (Rs200/$3 for a clean double). It's not in the main touristy area, but it's a short bike ride, or a nice stroll, away. Sebastian had recommended it, [View Full Entry]

It looks like the weather will stay on our side today. Unlike the last couple of days; we were treated with rain, hail, and heavy winds. I was eager to reach our next stop just so I could put my feet up and enjoy the clear view. "How much longer DB?" He was at least 20 paces ahead. "Pardon?" "How much longer before we get to the next place?" "Maybe 2- 2 1/2 hours." He noticed my disapointment. "Are you tired?" "I'm ok." I lied. As usual. ------------------------------------------------------------- I looked at the Machapuchare in the morning sunlight. "So [View Full Entry]

Peace at last

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
Hi folks, Just a quick run down of a very relaxed time in Pokhara next to the lake... well relaxed after Linz had had the usual argument with the hotel owner regarding the room price (they tell you 150 NRs when you get into their free transfer but it inflates to 300 when you get to the hotel). Naturally Linz won and we spent 3 very confortable nights by the lake. Pokhara is unbelievably beautiful (and would have been even more so if we could have seen the Annapurna's, but it was too misty whilst we were there.), with the huge [View Full Entry]

Visa perikelen!

 Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
