Background: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power.

On to India Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
Well Im off to India today! 17 hours on a night bus with a strike scheduled for morning. We might end up walking the last leg! What have I been up to the last week you ask? Well the answer is being sick. I seems that getting lost in bamboo forests was a bit too much for my body to handle. So I took myself to Pokhara to recover. A really beautiful place, where I could sit by the lake at lovely cafe and drink tea and read my book. It is a great place to recover. Sid and Serena came [View Full Entry]

Krazy Kathmandu! Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
Well People, sorry I haven't updated this on a while but I was nearly going to give up on it all during the last month. All will be explained in time. My first thought when I got into Kathmandu was 'What the fuck happened this place?!' The infrastructure of the place was shocking. Dusty dirty pot-holed roads, power lines hanging above peoples heads and wot-not, I know there was a war going here but that was fought mostly in the mountains. Going to have the keep the wits about me in this place I was thinking, going to have to look [View Full Entry]

Namaste from our 2nd capital city - Kathmandu. We wrapped up our tour of India on the 20th and had scheduled some well deserved down time, exploring the sights and sounds of Kathmandu. Unlike the picture that Lonely Planet paints of the city, it is quite a pleasant place to relax in. We were warned of the traffic and pollution but when compared to New Delhi it feels comparatively clean! We're staying in Thamel (ta-mel) which is the centre for tourists with resturants, shops, hotels and bazaars taking up every available space. It very much has the feeling of a small [View Full Entry]

Departure Day Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
TODAY is THE LONG AWAITED DAY. True to myself , I kept too much for last minute before I leave for the airport around 13h15. One challenge has been trying to fit some donations for kids in my limited luggage space. After repacking 4 times and it’s a very tight squeeze for 40 tiny teddy bears. I have been unexpectedly calm the past couple of weeks. Instead of worrying, there is a feeling of confidence. With little information about the location where my volunteering will take place, only a few days ago I learnt that Jitpur, located about 11 kilometers [View Full Entry]

Kedze Slovakom spod Lobuche trvalo 150km 11 hodin, aspon dopiseme dennik. 13. letime z Pokhary do Manangu , lebo sa nam nechce slapat zatopenymi ryzovymi polickami plnych Maoistov (nieco ako Fico [View Full Entry]

The one in Nepal! Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
And so here is the start of the second chapter.... the wonders of Nepal!! After a long flight to the airport and somewhat of a mission to get my visa sorted.... it really did not have to be so complicated had I looked into it and had the people at the airport been an ounce of help, but after getting money out, exchanging it into USA$ I finally claimed my bag... little did I know that the guy had not stamped my passport with the actual visa, and that I actually needed to take my receipt to another guy for that. Our flight to Kathmandu took an hour and a half and sadly we didn't see any major mountains - maybe from the direction we flew you weren't supposed to but we had been expecting to see some. After landing and going through customs and visa control (One month visas cost US $ 40 each, payable only in US dollars) we were met by the driver from the guest house we had booked into. Kathmandu looked like most other Asian cities, though there were no obvious high rises and the streets appeared to be very clean. It didn't seem to be as [View Full Entry]

The Big "E" and beyond! Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Thamel
We loved Lhasa and were sorry to leave but we started this final leg of the journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu with our minds firmly set on the Big “E” which undoubtedly was the highlight of this bit of the journey but we were delighted by the other unexpected highlights we came across along the way. For a start, the road between Lhasa and Kathmandu is known as the “Friendship Highway” which is another of the AA’s top ten roads to travel on in the world. We were on it for the best part of two weeks and it certainly was [View Full Entry]

Namaste Freunde!
