Well, I made it. This is going to be brief, as it is getting a bit late here, but I wanted to let everybody know that I made it here in one piece. Believe it or not, the three flights I took to get here were very bearable. I stayed up all night packing, so I had no problem sleeping on the first leg. The Heathrow to Abu Dhabi flight was completely abandoned, so I had a bed consisting of the four middle seats.
I took off from Newark, and flew right past a toy-model Manhattan. It seemed to say "do you really think you will be able to say goodbye to this?"
On the approach to Kathmandu, I caught my first glimpse of the fabled High Himalayas, though I think Everest remained coyly out of sight I think I saw Annapurna, plus a few other of the 8000ers.
When I got out, I smelled the air (which was smoky and a bit funky) and I knew I was someplace totally new.
I don't have any good pictures, but will post them as soon as I get them.
Cheers!
Dan

Dan - I am glad to hear you made it! Please send me good pictures for my wallpaper!
Daniel--DO go off the beaten track (especially if you have at least another traveler with you); it was always the source of my most exciting travel experiences. Those, however, were quite tame--in the back country of Western England or to some of the less frequented Greek isles--compared to what you'll be doing!
other than the smell, what else was there that made you feel like an alien (not the one referred by the press here for non-us citizens)?
