The Mongols gained fame in the 13th century when under Chinggis KHAN they conquered a huge Eurasian empire. After his death the empire was divided into several powerful Mongol states, but these broke apart in the 14th century. The Mongols eventually retired to their original steppe homelands and later came under Chinese rule. Mongolia won its independence in 1921 with Soviet backing. A Communist regime was installed in 1924. During the early 1990s, the ex-Communist Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP) gradually yielded its monopoly on power to the Democratic Union Coalition (DUC), which defeated the MPRP in a national election in 1996. Since then, parliamentary elections returned the MPRP overwhelmingly to power in 2000 and produced a coalition government in 2004. To be updated

Trip to Zuunmod Asia » Mongolia
It's been a long day. The LP suggested hailing down a taxi to take us seven kilometres to the Monastery. That would have been ambitious, as we only saw one vehicle in Zuunmod, I waved frantically, and it just so happened the drived had three free hours (oh thank God!) to drive us in his souped-up Lada along [View Full Entry]

Arrival in UB Asia » Mongolia » Ulaanbaatar
Arrived in Mongolia! Great flight on Air China with interesting food... a box with an frozen apple, frozen bun, soft cheese and three slices of cold pork. Delighted to see Emily standing at arrivals gate, having landed a couple of hours earlier from Moscow. I'd been scared by her the previous evening, telephoning from Manchester to tell me she would miss her flight to Ulaanbaatar via Moscow as her connecting flight down to Heathrow was delayed. Thankfully a few favours were called by BA staff and she just made it in the end, or I'd have been stuck alone on [View Full Entry]
