Well lets face it. As a city there isn't really much to the great KL. Most of the sights are at best average - with the exception of the twin towers of course - and can all be seen in a day but I managed to have a great time for 5 days there. Why? Because the food is great, the place is heaving and it has the biggest cultural mix of any city I've visited so far. I stayed in China town (The biggest and best china town I've seen so far) and the place is always busy except for the very early hours of the morning and even then it's hardly empty. The main street is technically open to cars all day though in reality the situation is quite different. During the day they ... read more

Flying over Poland we had a terrible spell of turbulance but fortunately we didn't spill any food or drink on ourselves. Other than that we arrived safely in KL yesterday. Immediately on our arrival we headed to a stall near KLCC for breakfast where we had roti canai - dirt cheap and very tasty! In the evening we had a great satay meal at another stall; this time at Medan MARA. Looks like we've quickly assimilated into the favourite local pastime of eating. Today we went to the KL International Motor Show. The highlight of which was the Honda robot, called Asimo, who seems capable of walking on the level and up and down steps. Late at night we went to KFC (ok so don't chastise us for that) and the "interesting" bit was when we ... read more

Of course, there's more to Malaysia than food and shopping, though like I said before, it is definitely worthwhile visiting just for that! The Petronas Twin Towers were an amazing sight. They are the tallest twin towers in the world, and were the tallest buildings I hear, until Shanghai built something taller. I won't go into the whole history of the building, I will let the photos do the talking.. They are an amazing architectural accomplishment as well, standing 452m above ground level!!! We went up to the Skybridge linking the two buildings as well - 170m above street level, the view was fantastic...... read more

After not visiting a beach for what feels like a lifetime, we headed to the east coast of Malaysia for a tranquil laid back time. The first stop was a small town called Cherating. It was dark as the coach driver suddenly braked and threw us off. We were the only ones who got off and we had no idea of where to go, but after a trek down the darkest of dirt tracks, with dog barks circling us, we found the town. We couldn’t tell until the morning but the beach was beautiful, with the coast sweeping round for miles. Apart from swimming, sun bathing, sports playing, drinking and eating, there was nothing else to do. I even found time to read a book. After a few days we heading further down south to the ... read more

Friends, Family and Strangers, how do you do? Kuala Lumpur (KL) the capital of Malaysia is where i be now. This place is great and is everything a city should be. Its modern, with a plenty of culture and there is an endless list of things to do and places to see. This is by far the best place on my trip. We arrived here on the Saturday afternoon, we had an idea of where we would stay due to a few people recommending some hotels. We headed for China town which was sold as old, cheap and great for shopping. Whilst walking to our hotel we were stopped by some bloke who said we could have a twin room with a shared shower and toilet, plus a roof that has great views of the city ... read more

KL rocks! seriously the best city in South East Asia in my humble opinion! The shopping is breath taking beats Singapore and Sydney hands down. Went to this one shopping centre called "Time Square" it has 10 massive floors, a cinema and a theme park with a rollercoaster in it! We were going to go onthe roller coaster but I thought it might be a bit too freaky looking down on cinema goers and stalls. We only made it to the fourth floor after like 10 hours of shopping. We decided to go to the cinema to rest the weary bones.Got to sit in the "Premier Class" area, which has big comfy seats and a waiter service all for 16 ringit ($4US). Just over 3 euros for those of you in Europe. That's what I call value. ... read more

I awoke late, which I blame partly on beer and partly on the fact that my room has no windows and therefore is pitch black without the light on 24 hours a day. I spent the day again wandering around KL, this time heading out west where the Bird Park, Gardens, National monument and so on Lie. Scam? As I was walking back to the hotel I was approached by a young (25yr old?) Malaysian woman who started chatting to me "where are you from, how long you here" etc. She asked me if I wanted to have a drink with her, so I decided not to be overly paranoid and went. I asked for a can so I could make sure it wasn't drugged. I was sure I was being set up for a scam, ... read more

Hello all! We have had a manic few days in Kuala Lumpur and then Singapore, it has been mad to be around so many people and definately a bit of a shock to the system! We arrived in KL after a crazy night train, 16hours from Thailand in a bizzare sleeper, was kind of like the bunks in a mental asylam but definately a step up from the dirty night ferry. We stayed in a very trendy hostel and it was nice to get chatting to some other people. We spent the days seeing the sights...lots and lots of walking...to see the Petronas twin towers which contain a huge shopping mall. Actually KL is full of shopping malls, loads of stories high, one even had a theme park in it! We also took time to explore ... read more

It was unmistakable when it appeared out of the bus windows - the KL and Petronas towers indicating that I had reached my destination. The futuristic skyline also serves to remind that Malaysia, and KL in particular, is economically the most developed in South East Asia after Singapore. My hostel was a short walk from the bus station in the bustling fringes of chinatown. My room: just big enough to fit my rucksack in next to the bed, and no more. But thats all I really need. Having listened to the receptionists advice on how I should avoid going anywhere with groups of pretty girls who claim their parents are out of town I set off to find dinner, my heart being set on a famous banana leaf curry. But as is always the case... sometimes ... read more
