Background: During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Great Britain established colonies and protectorates in the area of current Malaysia; these were occupied by Japan from 1942 to 1945. In 1948, the British-ruled territories on the Malay Peninsula formed the Federation of Malaya, which became independent in 1957. Malaysia was formed in 1963 when the former British colonies of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak on the northern coast of Borneo joined the Federation. The first several years of the country's history were marred by Indonesian efforts to control Malaysia, Philippine claims to Sabah, and Singapore's secession from the Federation in 1965.

Hello all We are just about to eave KL after a busy but v enjoyable 48hrs Left Manchester on time and arrived 5mins early after a comfortable flight - not bad after 12hrs and 6000 miles. It took almost 2 hours to get from airport to KL city centre with delays of rush hour traffic made worse by the arrival of thunderstorm and torrential rain. This has been repeated daily but has not stopped us getting out and about. When it rains I realise why the kerbstones are 12" high - the roads become fast flowing rivers and your feet [View Full Entry]

After saying goodbye to everyone at the airport I went through to the customs area. When I was there I met a lady who is living in Melbourne, but is originally from India. It was quite funny, because as we were walking through the metal dectors, they kept going off because she was wearing so much jewelry. It took her so many goes to get through. Once we got to Malaysia, we met up at the airport again. The hotel I am staying in is quite nice. It is surrounded by shopping centres. There is literally a mall on every side [View Full Entry]

When I first saw the movie Entrapment in the cinema I jumped for joy at the sight of the petronas towers. They are beautiful, and they were somewhere I had been! I'd stayed in the hotel connected to the towers, well fancy, we were lucky to have the executive floor... free food! yeaaaaurrrghhh [View Full Entry]

BEING A CIVIL ENGINEER, I am always fascinated with mega-structures - buildings, transport networks, tunnels, bridges, towers, dams, and other construction works having interesting characteristics; not only with the height but also in terms of how the structure was built as well as the amenities and features within it. One of them is the popular Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) as the second tallest building in the world which I visited in April 2004. The TwinsThe Twins (Petronas) stripped off the crown from Sears Tower, Chicago (US) where I also visited in 1997 a y [View Full Entry]

Just a quick update as this journal is 2 and a half months too late - Spent a couple of weeks at my folks place just chilling with them. A few nights out in KL and lots of going to the gym(?). Little did I know there is an indoor surf break in Kuala Lumpur otherwise I would have lived there. Also went to the Perhentian islands for about 3 days. They a quite beautiful, and the resorts are pretty basic and laid back. No over the counter alcohol so people stayed pretty relaxed while there. Tasty food too. Sorry no [View Full Entry]

Formula 1 - here we come! The flight with Malaysian Airlines from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) felt just like a short ride up in above the clouds and back down to earth. Even as we left Singapore for this trips 1st of 3 times we could feel the perfection. Our flight was "boarding complete" nearly 1 hour prior to tine of departure, it's like you can never be there early enough, you might miss your plane. Now, life is more than airports, and after some internal connections with buses, stairs, escalators and elevators we found our magic waiting [View Full Entry]

Our annual holiday was to Malaysia. We spent 4 nights in KL, and 8 in Borneo, relaxing in a lovely hotel. I had been to KL before when I 'travelled' from 1988 - 1990, but it was David's first trip. We walked a lot and went up the Petronas Towers, the pride of KL. It was very hot. We went to China Town, the Central Market, as well as the places shown in the photos. I am not going to put in a blog for Borneo, cos we really did just laze around in the hotel and on the beach, apart [View Full Entry]

Having survived my luxurious lazing around on beaches on the Thai islands we headed further south to Malaysia and spent 3 or 4 days in Kuala Lumpur. I really liked the city, especially the hawker stalls where you could get a feast for next to nothing. Mmmm! Unfortunately the skybridge at the Petronas Twin Towers was closed for maintenance on the days we were there but we did manage to go up the KL tower and get spectacular views over the city. One day we decided to venture a little further out of the city to the Batu Caves. After an [View Full Entry]
