While we were in
Sipadan {Darrell} we met a couple from Kuala Lumpur, who, after a common understanding of motion sickness, said that we were more than welcome to stay with them at their home if we were ever to pass through KL. After so many new places and new things to see, it was really so great to finally be able to go and spend some time with a familiar face.
Unfortunately our plane arrived pretty late, so by the time we arrived at her apartment, her children had already climbed into bed, but it was really so awesome to arrive in a place where kind and familiar faces had been expecting us. We spent ages chatting and catching up over tea before hitting the horizontal ourselves.
In the morning Azzlyn and her husband, Mos, took us out for breakfast to their favourite spot. It was fantastic. Azzlyn had told me in a few emails that the food in Malaysia was one of the highlights and this certainly did not disappoint. It was an Indian place, and even with spicy food not exactly what our stomachs are used to for the first meal of the day, the meal was
fantastic! After breakfast, Mos drove us up to the Petronas Towers and helped us get tickets for a tour of the world famous towers.
Seeing as our appointment for the tour was only at 2, we spent the rest of the day ambling through KL (find the name of the area) exploring the streets and enjoying the new novelty of
shopping centers with everything from clothing stores, and food to jewelry, surf shops and (most importantly) Apple Mac shops. One of my favourite places was the KL park, just outside the Petronas towers. It had beautifully manicured lawns for picnics, and talton running tracks weaving through the park. Maybe the best feature was a really nice public kiddies water park, with pools and fountains and everything. It really really is a spectacular city!
.
The towers were also incredible. The elevator ride on the express lift to the 44th storey makes-your-toes-tingle sky bridge was preceded by a short film on what the Petronas company is about and how the record breaking twin buildings were made.
The last exploration for the day was down to the brightly coloured China Town market. The buildings were, in contrast to KL center,
Impressive angles
Looking straight down from the skybridge all older and magnificent in their arches and balcony architecture. The buildings, however, are only a piece of what makes China Town so much fun. The long isles of densely arranged clothes, watches and gadgets packed only hip-width apart from each other means that nothing is going to happen fast so you can take your time and look at everything.
All too soon though, it was getting dark and it was time to get back to Azzlyn and the kids for movies and pizza. 😊 Again, we got there much later than planned, but because it was a weekend, Azzlyn made an exception to the bedtime rule. Darrell took full advantage and teased and played with the kids until it really really was bedtime.
I can't tell you how much it meant to us to be able to stay with such amazing people for a weekend. It was so nice being welcomed in and absolutely spoiled by the Aziz family. If you're reading this, if you're ever in South Africa, give us a call (or Facebook) and let us return the favour! 😊
First thing in the morning it was back to KL Sentral to catch our
flight to Johor Baharu. You need more than a day to explore KL!
