Well, we just made it through out second night in Kuala Lumpur which was not difficult considering the hostel we are at is called Back Home. I would not consider it like back home but they do think of everything. The beds are really comfortable and everyone is genuinely nice. No wonder it was rated the number one hostel in Malaysia. However, we wanted to stay another night but there is no room; they are booked up. We are now trying to decide if we should move on or try finding another place to stay. Yesterday, we went to the Batu Cave and Cave Villa. We were awed by the Murugan statue that greeted us at the front which happens to be the tallest in the world. Apparently, the faithful make a pilgrimage to the Batu ... read more

After a lightning quick 2.5-week respite back home in Singapore, I'm back on the road...again! Which kicks off the start of what I guess would be the third leg of my Southeast Asian adventure. And for my first stop, I'm back in the land of the Ringgit again, this time on the peninsular side, and the capital of Malaysia that is Kuala Lumpur (KL). It's funny how by virtue of its sheer proximity (just a 5h+ bus ride away) KL is arguably the foreign city that is best-known to Singaporeans. But despite having visited several times on road trips with friends and even working trips, I've never actually backpacked the city, and checked out its major tourist attractions. So it's kinda ironic that only after one year into my big regional backpacking trip, did I actually ... read more

Arrived late into Melaka after tortuous journey out from the jungle, starting on the world's slowest bus, held together by cable ties and with accompanying doddery driver swerving randomly across the road. Stayed in a characterful Nonya style hotel in the centre of Chinatown, full of authentic period details. Discovered the old colonial town fought over by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, with its famous clock tower and the hilltop ruins of St. Paul's Church before wandering around both the informative maritime museum and the Baba-Nonya heritage museum providing an intriguing window into the 19th century ethnic lifestyles and traditions. Later took an atmospheric boat cruise up the river when the hot daytime temperatures eased as dusk fell. After a stop for the sweet local pineapple tart specialities took a slightly (?) tacky tri-shaw ride, inconspicuously ... read more

We left Cat Ba to go to Sapa which was blissfully cold and then not so blissful and just bloody freezing especially when I discovered I had a infected toe and couldn't put shoes on so had to walk around in socks and flip flops; looking like a moron and freezing my tootsies off. We rented bikes and explored the surrounding hilliness and got roped into buying some shit off tribeswoman in Ta Phin a little village up in the hills. Then I was on my own for 2 days while Leah and Cec did a trek; luckily I've been before so I didn't feel too bad about missing out. There was no way I could do the trek when walking anywhere felt like my toe would drop off (it hasn't btw all healed no more ... read more

Firstly, let me apologise to those of you who DO NOT suffer from sleep disorders! This blog is quite lengthy and covers a good deal of ‘ground’! It is really a diary for Janie and I to try to remember some of the experiences we have had. Mrs Darling has, in fact, offered to present anyone, who manages to complete reading the blog without nodding off, a gold certificate! No takers so far!!! Anyway on with the task in hand. Just remember, if you’re knackered reading it, imagine how knackering it is actually doing it!!!! We arrived at Kuala Lumpur airport after a pleasant enough flight from Phnom Penh. It was our first time on AirAsia (the local version of Easyjet) and I must say we were quite impressed! However it became obvious that AirAsia have, ... read more

I have not updated this for a little while so here goes. Maher's brother Mazen arrived in KL a few days ago and it's been a nice bit of respite for me. A bit of company whilst Maher is working and we've had a few trips out, to Wangsa Maju and in search of a SIM for him and to Damansara Heights. Although I have met him before, it was before my relationship with Maher, so it was nice getting to know him as a brother-in-law this time. At 32 he is the eldest of the four siblings and really easy to get along with, very down to earth. We went out last night to an Arabic Restaurant in Shah Alam, that took 1 hour on the train. Mazen has a friend from Syria working there ... read more

GETTING READY/ PŘÍPRAVA Dear readers/ drazí čtenáři, welcome back after 2 years of silence :-) It doesn't mean that I have never been anywhere since then but it's rather me being lazy:-D Well, so here I am, getting ready for my Asian travels. To begin with, it was a bit of work to sort out my Visas. I applied for Vietnamese Visa first which was straight forward. One page application which was sent to my brother who sorted it out at the embassy in Prague. It was expensive though due to Multiple Entry. If we talking Pounds Sterling then it was about £100! Chinese Visa was much more complicated though. Despite the fact that you need to fill in 4 pages including information about your family and countries you have visited recently, you need to get ... read more

Selamat Pagi ! The heat hit us as we walked out of KL airport, even though it was half past Midnight - glorious ! we three of us had to share a bed for the rest of the night in an enormous hotel room but which only had a small double bed - we were too exhausted to complain at that time of night. By daylight our hotel, the Pacific Regency, is grand, with a roof top swimming pool and (distant) views of the Petronas Twin Towers. First activity at Eve's insistence was the pool of course !We ventured by walking to the Twin Towers in the afternoon but got lost and hot and flustered immediately - KL is a sprawling mass of congested traffic with no signs and with the usual Asian pavements full of ... read more

THINK....Bike Words we hear and see so publicly in the media. This is because Motorcyclists make up a disproportionate percentage of all road traffic accident victims, purely because of their vulnerability on the road. Last night whilst walking towards Masjid Jamek on our way to get food; we witnessed a horrific example of this misfortune. Both driver and passenger came off the bike whilst turning a corner. The male passenger without helmet I must add and no protective clothing hit the tarmac head first in his unforeseen impact with the road. The female driver with helmet hurtled through the air, landing only to injure her knee. I must say that I am not a physician in any way not did I attend to either of the victims and I would hope that both are recovering well ... read more
