What an awesome day! Having realised it was the end of harvest festival a festival similar to New Year in the Iban community I was glad I was visiting Kapit with a chance to visit the Iban longhouses. So after speaking with the information centre yesterday I arrived at the boat terminal an hour before the boat departed along with thousands more! All going back to their villages via Kapit. So looking rather lost a security guy/police officer helped me out by taking me out of the queue and finding me a seat on a full boat, 1st a seat on the roof then a seat in economy, whoo, so after showing me what I needed to do and where I needed to go I got my rice and chicken with cucumber for breakfast and found my seat. Reluctant to put my bag on the roof in fear of never seeing it again I was glad I packed light and am able to fit all my luggage at my feet even in economy.
Sat next to me was Josephine a girl the same age as me from Kapit coming home from studying in KK. So after speaking with Josephine for three
hours on the boat and learning she also had a sister called Jessica her mum and sisters picked us up from the boat terminal in Kapit. They helped me find a hotel, a guide to organise a trip to the long houses with, took me for breakfast and then to there home until I was able to check in the hotel! They were so friendly and a fantastic experience meeting Sarawak's people who really, genuinely want to help make your trip easier and special.
After speaking with the two guides Joshua and Alice recommended in Sibu and doing a little research I found that you should never trust Joshua and his price of 295rm for one night didn't compare to Alice's price of 450rm for three nights! Even during the festival. So I've booked to visit a Iban long house for 4 days over the festive season and will beable to eat food only cooked once a year, see costumes and dances and hopefully lots more! So excited.
I then went for a look around the town area and for something to eat. The cafes don't have menus you just ask for something so asking for rice I received rice,
a fried egg, vegies and wild bore satay. Getting up to pay one of the other guests had already paid for my meal and drink for me, after thanking him I sat down with them and talked about Kapit and its very multicultural community, the festival and Malaysia, all while they bought me more drinks (ice lemon tea!) And bore satay. How friendly is this community! And what an amazing town I can't believe there are so few tourists here for the festival.
After enjoying watching sunset over the river and men carry thousands upon thousands of eggs and live chickens (they can't possibly all be for the festival) from the boats I was ready to relax for the evening.
