A bit of info/history i found on the net:- Gazetted as a protected area on 1 May 1957 and was published to public on 4 may 1957. Bako is Sarawak's oldest national park, covering an area of 2,727 hectares at the tip of the Muara Tebas peninsula, about 45 min drive from Kuching city. It is one of the smallest national park in Sarawak, yet one of the most interesting as it contains almost every type of vegetation found in Borneo. Bako is also home to approximately 150 rare proboscis monkey, found only in Borneo. The male is an odd looking creature with a huge pendulous nose and a large pot belly weighting in excess of 20 kg. I managed to spot a group of them while trekking back to the park HQ. Too bad ... read more

Bako National Park Asia » Malaysia » Borneo » Kuching » Bako By Sophia CMarch 29th 2007Around the World Got up early this morning to get bus/boat to Bako, now I realise I have definately packed too much. Really struggled running to find the right bus. Fortunately the Malay run on "rubberband time" so the bus hadnt turned up yet and we were early. We met a Swedish couple, Lin and Nick, who were also going to Bako so we decided to share a taxi minibus which was much quicker. After bus we had to get a boat ride to the National Park, amazing way to arriv... read more

This weekend we organised an overnight stay at Bako National Park along with two other volunteers - Heather & Sarah, with the intention of hopefully seeing the Proboscis monkey. To get to Bako you have to take a short boat ride down the river in the South China Sea. The ride was very beautiful with small Malay village houses dotted along the banks and the majestic mountains in the distance covered with a layer of mist at the peaks. Once you arrive you have to jump out of the boat and wade through the unbelievably warm waters to the beach. After checking into to our basic (but cheap!) wooden lodge and a brief lunch (more noodles), we decided to head out on a short trek to see if we spot the elusive Proboscis monkey. We walked ... read more

Hello! What a brilliant time we have had in Borneo! After the longhouse trip we decided that as one of the 'World's largest flower species' was still blooming in Gurung Gading national park we would make a dash down there to see it. We woke up on Tuesday morning and the weather was awful! It rained, and rained, and rained! Nevertheless we braved our waterproofs and battled down to the bus stop to get the first in a series of buses to the national park. After 5 minutes walking we were wet from head to toe and quite an amusement to the locals! Damp, we arrived at the park at about 12.30. Unfortunately there were no guides around to take us to see the flower and then around the park (I suspect because none else was ... read more

After an eventful and tiring previous day, we got up late and checked out then went to the tourist office to plan the next few days in Sarawak. We booked 2 nights in Bako National Park where we could see the Proboscis monkey, found only on Borneo. After another egg & onion pancake to took a bus to Bako Village then a boat to the national park. We noticed some fish jumping out of the water near the boat and the next instant they were jumping into the boat and hitting us! Managed to pick up all the slippery characters and throw them back into the water. Arrived at a long sandy flat beach and checked into the park at the rangers office, took the key to our chalet and were greeted by a hoard of ... read more
