The only reason we had ended up in Malaysian Borneo was that we were looking for a link between the Philippines and Indonesia, and the cheapest option was to fly through Kota Kinabalu. As we started to look into Sabah, the Eastern province, we found more and more to do there. Aside from having some of the world's best primary rainforest, and one of the highest peaks in Asia, just off the East coast is an island called Sipadan. The island sits atop a rocky spike that rises 600 meters from the surrounding sea floor. The sheer wall between the deep blue and the pristine coral reef that surrounds the island attracts a host of marine life and makes for some of the best diving in the world. Both Scuba-nuts, we couldn't pass by without a ... read more

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is a lovely city sat right on the ocean. We explored the town and the bustling night market which was full of freshly barbequed seafood including tuna, squid and prawns which I just had to try- lovely! Also had time to check out the Sabah Museum which was less than great but did get to see some longhouses recreated (which sadly is as close to a real longhouse as I will get on this trip). Ev and I also headed out to Mamutik Island which is said to have the best snorkelling around KK. We arrived to find the small beautiful island but with visibility at about 1 foot. Although I did have some bread given to me by the other snorkellers so I at least saw some fish (with ... read more

Sipadan is an island off the north east coast of Borneo known for great diving. We spent three days diving around this little island and two others. There were dozens of sea turtles, some as large as a semi tire, which gives me hope for this species. However, there's a cave here where some of the get lost and eventually drown. :( We didn't dive there, the pictures bummed me out enough. We saw some other cool critters too, just check out the pics. We're off to Indonesia next. Ciao!... read more

Life is full of experiences...and diving well...has a lot to offer! Diving in Sipadan is truly magical, colorful and full of life but for the more adventurous minds it has as well something else to offer: cave diving! Welcome to a pitch black underworld where one’s life holds to a tiny lifeline...Ready for some high adrenaline sensations? Guess it took me half a second to make my mind...the very moment I saw on the diving board that cave diving was available I was technically harassing our dive master to meet the tech dive instructor and immediately put my name down. The next day, one of our new Australian friends, Marissa, tells me that she feels like giving it a try too, so two cave divers we will be!! We met the following day with David, THE ... read more

Whilst queing to check in with Airasia to Tawau I meet a couple of English guys called Dave and Ben, who were also going diving at Sipadan, so when we got to Tawau we shared a taxi to Semporna (where all the trips to Sipadan leave from). I have to say that this time I was a little nervious about flying after the 2 recent plane accidents, specially as we were travelling with Airasia, but nothing happened. We all checked in at the Dragon Inn, a nice hotel on the water, well, the rooms were on stilts on the water. I then went straight to find a diving operator who will have a free space for the following day to dive at Sipadan, and I was very lucky as only one was opened and they had ... read more

Back in Kota Kinabalu after a week diving in Sipadan/Mabul/Kapalai.... This destination had been on my wish list for a while...hard not to...the area has everything to offer from macro diving to some of the best shore dives in the world. Hard to resist any longer...so Sipadan here we come! One more flight (from KK) and a long and chaotic boat transfer (45mn) and we finally reached the Mabul Sipadan Resort. Had spent quite a while looking at the different options (no liveaboards in this area) and this seemed to be the best option...and indeed, we were not disappointed! The resort has been entirely thought of keeping in mind that 90% of the guests are divers, and every details has been taken care of...from the dive planning (I truly pity the manager in charge of dealing ... read more

Do you know that feeling.....than when you have to hurry things just go too slow!!! After a month in Indonesia, it was time to leave Bali (our last spot) and spent our last days diving in Malaysian Borneo! Just a quick meal in Kuta Beach before we would go to the airport......well we were so hungry that we almost missed our flight but.....luckily we just made it! Well for me it was traveling on familiar ground, since 5 years ago I had been traveling in Borneo...since Anneke got her openwater for diving last year in Mozambique, I wanted to take her to a great place for diving. So we would head for Sipadan, a small white sandy beach island 2 hours of the coast of Borneo! To get there we took the plane to Kota Kinabalu ... read more

Tuesday 29 July- Monday 3 August Kapalai Resort Pick up from Tawau airport on Sabah and transfer to Semporna by bus followed by a rough boat ride to Kapalai resort. But it's well worth the trip, this is paradise on the sea! Beautiful stilted bungalow resort, each with a very private seaview terrace and bathroom. Klas says it must be the best view ever while having a dump - he even saw a turtle come up for air! Great lounge areas too, and a real mix of nationalities, which is entertaining at times and worrying at others..... The dive team are professional and experienced. Our package includes three accompanied dives per day, two off Sipadan and one of Kapalai or nearby Mabul, as well as unrestricted diving from the jetty. Three dives a day is quite ... read more

KK and BK We arrived late in Kota Kinabalu. I was starving . . . since all I had eaten that day was some bread and jam in Macau. Once we finally found a place to stay--many places were booked up . . . I guess it's travel season for Europeans, we went hunting for a place to eat. The only places open for business at nearly midnight were KFC and Burger King. I'm sure you can guess what we ate . . . Burger King got our business. After dinner, we wandered around the town a little bit looking to see what was going on--too bad it was really late and there wasn't too much to see at that time of night. It seemed nice anyway. The next morning, we took a flight from KK ... read more
