We flew from KL to Sandakan to have a better transport to our goal: the Orang-utan Rehabilitation Center in Sepilok.Sandakan is a hub town offering transport's link to Kota Kinabalu and to Semporna. It hasn't changed a lot since the end of the World War II, and is historical place for Australian and British. The town itself is pretty basic and grey. We just did a stop over as there isn't a lot to see in Sandakan (a historical walk with WWII monument and Agnes Keith's house for those interested), so we had a nice expresso at the Nak Hotel: establish in 1966, it provide a nice roof garden terrace. We recommend the mall as you will find a shoe repair shop very effectiv. The man repaired Clive's sandals with new glue and new stitches! Old ... read more

When Sunjay first told me about Borneo, I admit I had to research it. Borneo had been on his list of destinations for some time and when we had an opportunity to take a vacation during Maya's Spring break, Sunjay contacted an agent from Borneo Adventures and made all the arrangements. It was quite reasonably priced package given that we had decent accommodation everywhere with breakfast and lunch included most days. The TV shows Survivor and Amazing Grace have been shot in Borneo. From my research, I discovered that Borneo is the 3rd largest island in the world after Greenland and New Guinea. Interestingly, it is divided among three countries Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia with 73% owned by Indonesia followed by Malaysia (26%) and Brunei... read more

Hello people, I hope you’re all ok. For me, I’m really fine and enjoying myself! Ok let’s catch up where we left. I think last time I just arrived at the airport of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah (where I meet Jay, an nice American backpacker whom I travelled with for a few days) Just a really small lesson of history first: Sabbah is the north east part of the Borneo island. Kota Kinabalu (often called KK) is the capital of Sabah. Around the 15th century, the sultana of Brunei extended its conquest over Sabah, then the sultan give Sabah to the sultan of Sulu as a thank you to for helping him during a civil war, then Sabah was exchanged for trading purpose with the English around the middle of the 19th century and became an ... read more

What an incredible couple of days! So after a lazy afternoon of writing blogs and watching The Discovery Channel in Sandakan, we continued where we left off from Kinabatangan with more wildlife. We were up and on a boat across to Selingaan (Turtle) Island - a tiny tiny island just across from the Philippines, and we thought Gili T was small! After landing on the island and finding our accommodation we headed out to the beach - armed with snorkel equipment. Geared up and ready to jump in the water something caught our eye - a large snake like head was bobbing about just off shore. After a mild panic attack, under closer inspection (and a lot of deliberation) we realised that the creature was a large monitor lizard having a lovely morning swim. We watched ... read more

The last few days have been absolutely incredible. Firstly we made the half-day bus journey to Sepilok Orang Utan Sacntuary, where we were able to watch a family of Orang-utans at feeding time. They were adorable and such show offs! Including tight rope walking, hanging upside down, using buckets as helmets and more. Really amazing. Following this was an interesting video about the efforts of the sanctuary. And although generally Sepilok is meant to be FULL of people (even a few days before we went) we must've just hit the post holiday lull as it worked out cheaper, and there were only 20 people there - as opposed to the norm of a hundred or two. A night at the lodge just round the corner, then the next day we made our way over to the ... read more

We arrived in Sandakan around 10ish in the morning and we took a taxi to uncle tans base. We had our buffet lunch then were driven to the jetty where we took our long tail boat downstream on the river to the jungle camp. On the way we saw loads of birds, a crocodile and lots of long tail macaques on the river bank. Fingers crossed for an Orang utan! We hopped off and were greeted by Lan the camp manager. We were assigned a hut which would fit all of us. We got only the basics - three double (but Asian sizes) mattresses with mosquito nets and a plastic bin to put our food in so that the rats didn’t chew holes in our bags. After dinner we set off for a night time river ... read more

Kota Kinabalu-Mt Kinabalu-Sandakan We finally arrived in KK at 1 am after a somewhat delayed flight with Air Asia. Fortunately had a Terry Pratchett audio book on my MP3 player to pass the time. Woke up to a bright and sunny day in KK. We didn't spend more than a few hours in the town as we will be returning there after about a week. Took a mini-van out to Mt Kinabalu National Park. We had to sit and wait in the hot van for some time whilst waiting for it to fill up, the young Russian women in front were getting quite frustrated. More Terry Pratchett helped pass the time. The van driver very kin idly dropped us right at the front door of our lodge, the D'Villa Hotel. A little tired but a good ... read more

Sabah – Wildlife adventure continued We left the lodge and headed for Seplikok Orangutan Centre, which was “ok”. We, and 20 other tourists, saw a mother and her baby and another lone babe. It allowed us to wander round and say things pretentiously like “they are a bit more orange in the wild”. Apparently in the afternoon there are a lot more at feeding time. That afternoon we were dropped off at Nipah Lodge and were the only guests at this out of the way (in the middle of a plantation) accommodation! Us, and the “guys”, ventured out in the evening for a spot of glow worm hunting. Which was lovely…an experience punctuated by Tory whispering to Will “I think we are being kidnapped”. In all honesty it was fun and everyone at the lodge was ... read more

Sabah We spent one more night in our hotel in Kota Kinabalu with en suite mall while Will recovered the use of his legs. We decided to save his legs further by trading in our 7hr bus journey the next day, for a 40 minute flight (and a Starbucks) to Sandakan. It is a great feeling to arrive at your destination knowing that you would still have 4 hours to go via bus. It also meant that we had an afternoon to explore the town which we did slowly, as Will’s legs still refused to travel downhill at any kind of pace. We went to Agnes Newton Keith’s house and were the only ones in there. Agnes Keith was an American writer who journeyed to Borneo with her husband (the British government’s conservator of forests) in ... read more

Went to see the Orang Utans again. Seen a movie about the park. While the Orangs got fed, some smaller monkeys came, and cheeky steal the food. A woman, who came in a big group from a cruiseboat compared it with the scene at the buffet. My mum adoped an Orang Utan and we had a little chat with Emma from UK. She is doing voluntarie in the park and told us a bit about it. The afternoon we drove to Sandakan, strolling through the roads, finding it looks pretty poor. Many things are like in India, cheap clothes, fakes, rubbish in the streets. At least I saw two big Monitor Lizzards, swimming at the waterfront.... read more
