So aside from our exciting mountain climb, we did some other cool stuff during our 9 days in Kota Kinabalu (KK). We stayed in a good hostel called the Beach Lodge; the first 2 nights we shared the dorm with 5 really nice people from the Phillipines and at the time we had no idea that we'd bump into them again on the mountain (2 or 3 times)! KK is a pretty nice, fairly small city with lots of shops, markets, bars and restaurants and promenade on the harbour front. We visted 2 small islands off the coast on 2 days which form part of a national marine park. While trying to find the ferry port the first time (lousy Rough Guide map had it in the wrong place!) we got talked into renting a small ... read more

(I don't have a cable for my photos so photos will follow) Fri 5th Jan After I had finished writing my last email I went to the hotel that we had to meet at the next day and asked if anyone had checked in. A lady called Mellinda had and so I went and knocked on her door and aranged to meet the next morning. I then had a disarster trying to get back to the hostel as I got on the right bus but didn't recognise where to get of and the driver didn't tell me (prob didn't understand when I asked). So I ended up back in town!! Lucky it was a circular route. When lady realised I was stuck she ended up walkingme all the way back to my hostel. It was so ... read more

4th -My last day in Australia I spent at Bondi Beach meeting a friend from home- Peter. He had come form asia a couple of months ago so he told me all the best places he went. We also did a 2 hour walk with him, his cousin and his friend around the headland I forgot this was the plan and had turned up to the first sunny day in a while wearing tracsuit bottoms ready for the night flight! It ended up being a bit of a rush to get to the airport but of course once I got there I still had to que for ages to check in. My first flight to Kula Lumpur was long and I was stuck right in the middle of the middle row so had to climb over ... read more

We took an early flight to Kota Kinabalu or KK as it is known here. We called Bal's mum Rena and said hi we are here! sorry we arrived unannounced, but Rena was very happy to come and pick us up from the airport. first impressions of KK were wonderful the people here are amazing.... Spent one night with Rena at her new house, which has just been built in the hills, the second day we went to her local market and she showed us the true art of bartering. Stayed a night in KK city house with Rena, then caught a vey fast bumpy, winding bus to Sandakan. pictures of KK below and Rena's house for Bal to see......... read more

From KL we flew to Sabah in Malaysian Borneo (Borneo is divided into 2 parts, that owned by Malaysia and that owned by Indonesia). We are here predominantly for the wildlife and diving and so headed straight for a tour operator to book our excursions for our week-long stay. On their instruction, we left for Sepilok the next morning which took 6 hours on the bus and past the stunning Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in SE Asia. We wanted to climb to the summit but sadly there were no spaces while we were there (G suspects Nat is quietly pleased!). Sepilok is an area of protected rain forest that is home to the Worlds most renowned Orang Utan Preservation Centre. At this sanctuary, you can see Orangs at various stages of rehabilitation being fed and ... read more

Clambering down from the rickety base-camp bunk-bed, I turn off the 2am alarm and wonder vaguely what was going through my mind when I packed for this trip. Already shivering in the frigid early morning air, I blearily consider my woefully inadequate clothing options. Let me sum it up for you like this: I'm about to climb to the summit of the highest mountain in South East Asia and I don't even have dry underwear to put on. A t-shirt still wet from yesterday's climb, a pair of light running shoes, a thin jumper, rain-jacket, quick-dry travel trousers, a beanie, gloves & a make-shift scarf (the bandanna I used in India to filter out road-dust) complete my rag-tag ensemble. The up-side is that I don't have to decide what to wear; I just put on every ... read more

After settling in back in KK we decided that we wanted to do the fishing we didn't manage to do on our python hunting trip. We hadn't had the supplies we needed and the fishing platform was out of order. This time we were prepared. Unfortunatly after 15 minutes drive the minivan broke down, the breaks stopped working. So we got towed away to Vincents mothers place where we borrowed a Toyota Corolla of his nephew. Vincent felt bad that we didn't manage to go fishing for the second time so he was decided that we did something. As we thought the birdpark was a bit dull we went to the crocodile farm. The crocodile farm is basicly it's name, they farm crocodiles. They must have had a few hundreds in 30 or so pools. Apart ... read more
