Sorry guys, been a bit of a long time since the last blog! We have been writing in our diary everyday with old fashioned pens so never fear, you'll all be able to sit through hours and hours of our adventures when we get back.. just think.. 365 days worth of Sarah and Ben fun!! Bet you just can't wait!! hehe So.. what have we been up to? Well as you can guess we are now in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, a Malaysian state of Borneo. We arrived this morning (we had to get a flight from KL at 7.50 in the morning.. which is not fun considering the terminal is actually an hour and a quarter long bus ride from the city!) and had a look round town today. From what I can ... read more

Touching down in Kota Kinabalu (KK) in the Malaysian side of Borneo we both were struck at how clean and tidy everything was. After a month in the Philippines we had become used to seeing everything being cobbled and bodged together - for instance, the sink drain in one of our rooms was the top half of a soft drink bottle funnelled into a hollow piece of bamboo. All the cars in the Philippines were customised jeepneys belching out smoke, home-made-looking cars and tricycles with too many passengers, also belching out grey or black smoke - by contrast in KK all the cars were modern western style cars, in reasonably good condition. This was all a huge shock to us - living in Singapore, we had previously thought of Malaysia as the poor relation, heading ... read more

9 - 12 June -- The island of Borneo comprises Eastern Malaysia, Brunei and a large part of Indonesia. We arrived early afternoon on an Air Asia flight to Kota Kinabalu, on the northern coast of Sabah, Eastern Malaysia. The town was a pleasant costal small city, but a far cry from the paradise of Tioman or the sophisticated chic of KL. Nonetheless, we headed down to the market to take in the sights and sounds and plan our stay in Borneo. Made the mistake of checking out a local nightclub (hey, it was Ladies' Night). We were told it was called "Hugs". When we arrived we saw the garish neon sign above actually read "Jugs". Oh, dear. Inside it was as could be imagined, lots of Chinese girls, twice the amount of guys and ... read more

Hi all! No, I'm not home-home back in Cali, rather after 4 months volunteering in the Philippines and nearly 2 weeks in Hong Kong visiting a friend and enjoying the sights, I am finally back in my favorite country, Malaysia. I have been in Sabah, East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo for just over a week now. The past, what, month or two, I have been quite negligent in my writing and updates, and for that, I duly apologize. Now I have some time and energy to write and should let you know where I have been and what I have been up to the past couple months. Where to begin, oh, where to begin.... Ok, I'll start with saying HI and welcome to everyone I have added to my blast list the past few ... read more

So Raleigh has been over for a few weeks now and totally enjoying my freedom! It has been an amazing experience and really loved my time in Sabah, it has been amazing living and working in the local communities and getting to know the locals, I really feel like I have got to know a place and will miss it when we move on. Really was a fantastic thing to do and would recommend it to anyone thinking about it, (once you get past the Raleigh rules) made some really great friends in Sabah, and really feel as if I know the place now and love it - I will be back. Since the end of Raleigh it has been just as hectic so many people to say good bye to and been having a ... read more

Manutik Island Asia » Malaysia » Borneo » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu By jojoleechMay 20th 2007Joanna LeechAfter all the hard work, trekking and manual labour of the last 7 weeks it was finally time to chill out! We hearded over to Manutik Island to do my advanced open water, with Boreo Divers. It is a beautiful island and we were the only ones living on it for the week - so our own deserted island, kind of! Spent the next 5 days doing as little as possible, diving a couple of times a day, swiming round the island (takes about an hour, all the way r... read more

So after arranging the international flight from Clark to Kota Kinabalu and saying goodbye to my wife I arrived at my destination - a backpackers place in Kota Kinabalu. Abdul welcomes me and asked me what I intend to do in KK, this is rather surprising given that prior to my departure he told me the mountain climb, guides and accom was all sorted. So i tell him, "I'd like to climb the mountain in the four days I am here, it's all booked isn't it?". He looks at me, laughs and tells me, "I'm sorry I couldn't book it, there were no places left". At that point I was about to poke him in the eye. Not wanting to show my annoyance I just asked him if there was anyother way tio do the climb. ... read more
