White Water Rafting
This was the most fun rapid.. you can see why! Well what a crazy time we have had here so far. We flew from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur for one night, and stayed near the airport, paying $40 for a room which was just as basic as the $5 room we are staying in now, and then flew out the next morning to Kota Kinabalu, in Borneo. Only things weren’t quite that easy. We somehow managed to miss the flight. We realized we were standing in an international line for check-in but it was a domestic flight. So we found domestic, looked at our watches and realized that the flight was due to take off in 3 minutes! So we had missed our flight and had to forfeit our seats. We had to buy new tickets!! Luckily it was only about $100 each for the flight, but we will be sure never to miss another Air Asia flight ever again! Air Asia as Malaysia’s answer to Virgin Blue, same uniforms, same website, same everything, except that Air Asia have free seating, so no one gets allocated a seat. That means there is a mad rush to get on the plane first and get a good seat. After they let on mothers

Down the Padas River with children and elderly passengers, they let the bulls rush through. We waited patiently till last just thinking that they were all just impatient, not realising their ulterior motives, and were second last on the plane, but luckily we sat second from the rear of the plane, and got the row of seats to ourselves.
The scenery from the plane was unbelievable and you could see the perfect beaches from the plane as we gained closer to landing. KK airport is right on the water, along with the city which follows a jetty along the water. The weather was fantastic! After getting on at miserable Hanoi, KK was hot and humid, more humid than Brisbane, and we loved it! We arrived at our hotel The Beach Lodge, which we had pre booked on the internet and planned our week here. We booked white water rafting for the next day, and there were some other Aussies booked to arrive at this hotel later in the afternoon,
Ali and Dave, and the hotel staff said they would ask them if they would like to join us rafting. The next day when we met them, a couple from Canberra, Ali looked familiar to me
Ahhh... the beach...
Why would anyone ever want to go home... but not that much. During our hour and a half bus ride, followed by an hour and a half steam train ride along the river, we realized that we had played waterpolo together when we were 13 in Canberra, ten years ago. She is even still close friends with one of my good friends in Canberra that I lost contact with, and had dinner with her last week before leaving the country!!! So it will be good to get in contact with her again. Crazy small world!
So after a train ride that we thought would kill us, we arrived at the starting point for safety debrief and morning tea. There were only four people rafting with our company
Busat, (which was by far the better company and had much better lunch too!) and all the other rafters were with the other company. So our boat had us 4, 2 Germans from the other company, and 3 Malaysian guides. We had a great time, the Padas River has grade IV rapids, but we were soon bored and seeking more fun, so we jumped out and body rafted down the rapids which was heaps more fun! Jen even rode at
Ahhh... the jetty...
The view heading home from Sapi Island the front of the raft like a cowboy while we all paddled alternate directions and went spinning around in circles down a rapid. Awesome. Or as Dave and Ali would say like true Aussies: Awwwwwesome. Our raft was by far the most adventurous raft (except for the massive German guy who was shitting himself the whole way down and wouldn’t body raft - hahaha) while all the other rafts did nothing exciting at all.
So after our fantastic lunch of Lamb (my favourite!) rice and noodles, it was back on the train and bus to arrive home. We had dinner with Ali and Dave and lay around the next day doing not too much. We decided to seek out some night time entertainment and found a club called Bed, which looked like a hot club. Unfortunately they had the worst entertainment with three Malaysians singing and dancing, thinking they were the shit. So we played pool and laughed and headed home after happy hour, when jugs off beer went up to AU$30! Because Malaysia is a Muslim country, alcohol is quite expensive as it is not common.
On Friday, I went with Ali and Dave out to Sapi
More Rafting
Row row row your boat... Island, for a day of snorkeling and swimming in the tropical blue waters. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Every time I saw myself in the water in the reflection of Dave’s sunglasses, I could not believe that I was there. It is so unbelievable, so beautiful beyond expectation. I saw some beautiful coral fish, little nemos and stuff, that all came right up to your snorkeling mask and were not at all afraid of humans. Very cool and very creepy all at once. Imagine having 20 fish all swimming right up to your face staring at you… played on my paranoia. I though they wanted to bite me! It was again: Awwwwwesome. Then some Japanese man speared a fish about a foot long with a stick and was parading around like he was so proud of himself. Yeah way to go man, spear a tame fish in a nature reserve. Cool. I had a great time but missed jen terribly, who was off climbing a mountain.. she will update the next blog with the story, hopefully today or tomorrow.
Love your guts
Erin xx and of course the perfect Jen Jen PS Mum we
