As soon as I walked into our jungle hut (as it were), I noticed a small spider perched on the wire mesh of the window in front of my mattress. This wasn't a particularly big spider, but did have a lot of stripes and paterns on his body. I have learned that it is not necessarily the big bugs that do the most damage, but the wee little ornate looking ones that can pack the punch. I stood for a while in front of him seeing if he would make the first move. I had my knife ready to go, although thinking back on it, I'm not sure a knife would have done better than a rolled up magazine. We watched each other for a minute or two before I decided to let him live. He ... read more

Sunday 30th August 2009 We had a leisurely morning as the first day of our 3D / 2N jungle trip didn't start until 2.30pm. We made our way down the road from Labuk B&B to the Uncle Tan Operational Base, the company we are heading into the jungle with. The staff at the B&B had given us an idea of what to pay for a taxi to Uncle Tans (RM3-4), but the taxi drivers weren't cooperating, they were asking RM10. It was interesting trying to haggle with them, to see how far they would go and at what point they would walk away. Well, initially they walked at RM10. Even the guy at the back of the queue wasn't interested in negotiating - and he'd be back in line before anyone even left SORC so no ... read more

I think I’m probably going to make myself unpopular amongst people who have been there and loved it, but I found the Kinabatangan River to be distinctly underwhelming. For anybody who’d just arrived in Borneo and been nowhere else it must seem magical but for me, having been lucky enough to have probably been spoiled by travel, it was a big disappointment. Partly it was my fault due to a poor choice of accommodation, partly it was because I hate organised tours and activities, and partly it was because its just really not that great. My two main reasons for going were to see the Bornean “pigmy” elephant and the rare Storm’s stork, both of which I did see so that was the objective fulfilled, but apart for those and a few other good sightings I ... read more

The human body has four million pores, and the an area of skin, the size of a quarter, has over 600 sweat glands. WELCOME TO THE EQUATOR, Sabah, Malaysia....BORNEO! Now most people I have talked to about my trip, even before going had no idea where Borneo was, much less heard of it. So I am going to delve into some geography for a second and explain what makes this such a unique island. Borneo is by no means a small island, in fact it is the third largest island in the world. It straddles the equator and is cut in half by two neighboring countries, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They have found signs of human life on Borneo dating back tens of thousands of years, but that is not what drove me to the island. I ... read more

What I'm reading: V.S. Naipaul, Among The Believers: An Islamic Journey ...where was I?...I left off the last blog crashing cross the Celebes Sea on a thin piece of boat, gripping tight to the side of, thinking will I survive? I made a quick glance back and the little brown man was standing upright holding the engine motor arm - totally in control. He looked as if he had done this trip thousands of times already, a boring commuter journey for him. I had to walk to the ATM machine in town to pay the man, I told him I'd be back. I then got to the dusty town and a fifteen minute walk to the ATM where I had to withdraw the money for the boatman. As I stepped out of the booth, a man ... read more

After our Sipadan adventure we were ready to see what there was to discover in the Borneo rainforest. We had heard great things about the river cruises and treks through the rainforest and we managed to get a last minute booking into the Nature Lodge which is situated on the lower Kinabatangan River in East Borneo. We arrived at the lodge mid afternoon after a bumpy bus ride down dirt roads, and a short jetty to cross the river to the camp. For being a Nature Lodge, we still had such amenities as 24 hour electricity! The first thing on the agenda for the afternoon was a 2 hour cruise down the Kinabatangan river to see some of the local wildlife. With images of pygmey elephants, crocodiles, and orangutans dancing in our heads, it was quite ... read more

Goodbye to "Mr Fantastic!" AJ and I arrived back in KK, and a day later we left each other. His two month sojourn in South East Asia had come to an end and he had to get back to Hanoi to catch his return flight to ye olde Europa. It was the end of something special...a good travel companion, if not maybe my best friend, definitely someone I can trust and rely on. Oh, and laughter, lots of biting acerbic wit and laughter. Ha! "This is fantastic!" As I left the hostel at 5.30 in the morning for my bus to Semporna he even got out of bed (his second fave place) and gave me a farewell hug. It was akin to me putting listening to his pregnant baby - the bloody giant Dutchman. Bus journey ... read more

Sandakan. We had such an amazing time in Sarawak, and then we find ourselves in the town of Sandakan, in Sabah. It's expensive, the men ogle, and it ain’t pretty. We book the Kinabatangan River Valley trip (2 nights costing the price of a full week in Sarawak) and get the heck out of Sandakan the very next morning. We pay extra to stop at the Gomantang Caves on the way to the river, having enjoyed the spelunking in Niah Caves so much. These caves were not nearly so impressive, except on the olfactory system. The stench of guano clears the sinuses immediately. The boardwalk is barely high enough to clear the guano, and another tourist in flip flops is getting an interesting foot treatment. It's slippery too, and you wouldn’t want to slip in here. ... read more
