We...love...Penang!

What's not to love? There's a fantastic contrast between the modern and the traditional, East meets West. But then it's hardly a huge surprise that Hans and I would love somewhere that has been dubbed 'the food capital of Malaysia'!! And boy did we eat!

We stayed in a tiny box room (with the most powerful air con ever, it was like sitting in the fridge) above a net cafe...unfortunately the walls were paper thin and we had a guy sleeping next door whose snoring bore resemblance to the landing of a super-powered jet plane. Anyway, on the upside was right across the road we had 'Panjaab's Tandoori' where we ate the most fantastic chicken tikka, garlic naans, aloo gobi and mango lassi. We're getting this guy into the Lonely Planet, it was the best feed we've had since we arrived. He took such pride in his food, he marinated everything all day so we always knew in the morning what we'd be having for dinner. Legend.

We visited the Kek Lok Si Temple, which is a beautiful Buddhist temple up on a hill. On the way up you pass the turtle ponds, and fish ponds. From

the very top you can look over the whole of Penang, fantastic views in a very calm and peaceful surrounding.

We also spent a shameful day in Gurney Plaza (thanks for the tips Pei Theng!)...I don't think you've seen someone (me) get so excited about seeing a Topshop...had a Malaysian-style Nandos and watched a film at the cinema...we are not ashamed to admit we loved 'Legends of the Guardian'!! ;-)

We went on a random wander towards the coast and saw a WW1 memorial and a buoy just out to see which marked the spot where a Russian ship was sunk by a German submarine in 1914...I was beside myself with excitement...also saw Fort Cornwallis. Had a wander through Little India and decided to stop to have a drink and ended up in the most packed and QUIETEST cafe ever. Everyone was studying. Whoops!

From Penang we booked our plane tickets to Kuching, Borneo...
