3/16/2009 (Monday) So after nearly a week in Siem Reap, Cambodia I headed to Malaysia where I would first visit my friend Yee Chea and her family in Pulau Penang which is an island just off the Northeast coast of Malaysia. I booked my ticket on AirAsia.com as it was the cheapest airline to fly out of Cambodia. If you ever fly out of Cambodia beware though! Every entry and exit requires visitors to pay a $25 fee to leave and enter the country. There is no fee to enter or leave the country by bus (not sure by boat) but there is a visa fee of course which is $25 also. The flight itself cost around $70 and I booked it online while I was in Thailand about a week before perhaps. The flight was ... read more

From leaving Koh Tao by boat the next couple of days were spent travelling. We caught a three hour boat to Chumpon in Thailand. The boat ride was great and as there were only a handful of people on it we got the best seats in the house, or on the boat if you like......for free!! The weather was warm and as we reached Chumpon the pace slowed and we left the sea and sailed through a fishing river. Despite the boats looking interesting, the smell of fish was pretty strong and what some would call pungent!! Once getting off the boat we got on a bus for half an hour to Chumpon Train Station. We arrived at the station at 6ish but our train wasn't until 10pm so we had a few hours to kill. ... read more

After a fairly late and drunken evening, we dragged ourselves out of bed at 8am, finished our final packing and started the hike to the pier. The boat journey was not one of our favourites but after almost 6 months, we were accustomed to travelling with a hangover. We arrived in Krabi at 10.30am and boarded a minibus for a town further south nearer the Malaysian border. As usual Me and Ollie were the tallest and were also crammed into the smallest seats at the back of the bus. However, after 6 months we had also learnt to perfect the art of contortionism and after a small re-arrangement our limbs were slightly more comfortable. .......A painful 6 hours later, we arrived at our destination and changed into another mini-bus. This time we had far more space ... read more

Feb 8th - 9th: We took a bus up to Butterworth where we stayed for one night and then caught what was supposed to be a 6 AM train out the next morning to Padang Besar, the border town where we crossed into Thailand. On our way to the train station in the morning we met a fellow American traveller by the name of Kendall who we ended up traveling with for the next few days. While waiting for the train, which left a couple hours late, we ended up getting to know him. Kendall is a med student from San Diego who is about to start his residency and is enjoying his last bit of freedom. The border crossing was once again, very lax. When we arrived in the Padang Besar train station it was ... read more
