I had a booked a full day's tours so that I could see and do as much as possible in my full day in the Highlands. We left around 9 am, in a battered old jeep. There was me, the guide and a Korean family. We drove for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half. It was a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies. I was content watching the scenery pass by from the window. We turned off the main road and headed along a dirt path, it was quite muddy, but our jeep made it up and we didn't get stuck. We were off on our hike through the jungle to see the Rafflesia. We headed along the path for a while, before taking a turn (that I would have never spotted) ... read more

It was an early start for me, I was getting picked up from the hostel and taken to the bus station by minivan. I managed to get some breakfast and headed down to get my key deposit and wait for my ride. When I got downstairs, there was no one about and when someone did turn up, it was all a bit if a rush, as they had to go and get someone else who could give me my money back and the minivan driver had turned up and then buggered off. Luckily, he was just waiting in his van around the corner. There were a few other pick-ups and soon we were deposited at the bus station in town. I had tried to book a minivan seat to get to the Cameron Highlands as it ... read more

Thirty-second history lesson for the day: Back in 1885, during the British colonial era, a government surveyor named William Cameron stumbled upon a beautiful plateau nestled in the Titiwangsa mountain range in Malaysia's interior. It was suggested that the area would be the perfect location for a retreat from the heat and humidity of the lowlands, as well as ideal terrain for farming. An isolated hill station was developed about 30 years later, followed by what is now the famous Boh Tea Plantation. Today, the Cameron Highlands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Malaysia! Seeking our own respite from the heat and humidity in KL, we accepted an invitation with our new friends Daryll, Jasmine, and Suzan to join them on a day trip to the highlands. This involved waking up ... read more

Was man hier halt so Berg nennt.

Thursday, 18th September 2014 Good morning Cameron Highlands! The time was 7am as I disembarked from my coach bus as it pulled into Tanah Rata Bus Station. I was welcomed by a cold gush of morning breeze as I made my way slowly to the guesthouse, located at the edge of the town. Still, the walk took no longer than 10 minutes as I soon reached the doorstep of url=http://www.tripadvisor.com.sg/ShowUserReviews-g1497917-d4697044-r231340879-Arundina_Cameron_Highlands-Tanah_Rata_Cameron_Highlands_Pahang.htmlArundina, my home for 2 nights. As it was still too early for me to check-in, I left my luggage with them after a quick breakfast to commence my own exploration of the town. I was thankful that I managed to catch some wink on the bus the night before which gave me the energy to embark on the trail to Parit Falls. Starting from Century Pines ... read more

We have just had the most fabulous 3 days up here in the cool Cameron Highlands. We have been staying in a little town called Tanah Rata, which has such a lovely vibe to it. The first day we just mooched a bit, ate good food and got to know the place. The second day we booked ourselves on an all day trip with a brilliant company called Eco Cameron, they specialise in all things nature with an environmentally friendly approach. Our guide turned out to be somewhat of a legend with all things nature and botanical, Francis you were da man! Our day of adventure started out with a 2 hour trek through the rainforest in search of the famous Rafflesia flower, these things are so rare and only grow in certain parts of Asia. ... read more

HE SAID... With a six hour minibus trip to Tanah Rata ahead of us, we woke early (in Melaka) and walked around the corner to Restoran Melaka Raya for a teh tarik (pulled sweet milky tea) and take away banana rotis (flat flaky Indian bread). This small street–front cafe with small plastic tables and chairs is open 24 hours, and it serves incredible food and tea. We jumped in the minibus at 7.30am and began our journey north towards the Cameron Highlands. We pulled into Tapah for a quick toilet stop at 11am, and stepping from the comfort of the air–conditioned minibus into the furnace outside was breathtaking – it was incredibly hot! We then began our slow and eternally snaking journey upwards into the Cameron Highlands. The road was narrow with steep drop offs over ... read more

I thought I'd finished writing about this area, we had just one day left but unfortunately it rained. This made for a whole new view of the mountains in mist. Reminded me a lot of the Lake District back home. Also followers of our blog, Bob and Linda, asked for photos of around town as Bob lived here years ago. So here goes, more photos for Bob and anyone else who is interested!... read more

Two things the Cameron Highlands are famous for are the jungle/ rainforest walks and the tea plantations. We bought a map and began exploring. First we set off on a jungle trail to Robinson waterfalls, the path was fairly flat but strewn with fallen down trees that had to be climbed over. Now I don’t mind that bit but I do worry what creature or insect may be lurking unseen just where I need to put my hand! The vegetation was amazing, twice the size of anything we have in the UK. The jungle trail ended up close to the road that led to one of the largest plantations so of course we had to go and see it. After walking for over 5 kms we came to the tea rooms/factory. Most of the road to ... read more
