Many travellers planning to visit langkawi would struggle to decide which hotel to stay in. Having visited this magical island on several occasions, I thought I would share some practical information with those who would like to know some first hand experience about a few hotels in Langkawi.
First on the list is the Andaman. I like the Andaman. They have a beautiful beach with fantastic views. It is quiet and peaceful. Tucked away at the far NorthWest end of the island, it is a little far to get to. If you like exclusivity at a reasonable price, I think this may be the best choice on the island. The staff were friendly and the service was really good. I also like their restaurants although rather pricey. So, if you are looking for affordable local eat-outs, car hire is the way to go.
Next to the Andaman is the Datai. I think its reputation probably precedes its real presence. The deluxe room was nothing extraordinary. The chalets which are located in the jungle are more appealing, but also come with hefty price tags. The jungle is pretty impressive and full of wildlife which makes you feel disconnected from the busy world. Service is what you would expect from a 5* resort. However, my experience was that they were a little double standard when it comes to their own guests and customers who are only there to their restaurants etc. Take nothing away, I think they are an excellent resort still.
Casa del Mar is the jewel of this island. They are very friendly and reasonably priced boutique resort. Located at the Cenang Beach, it is of course the most happening spot on the Langkawi island. Having the pool by the beach is an excellent idea and there were little lovely extras like cold towel and watermelon on the beach. Food is excellent here too.
If you are a green traveller, then you would applaud the efforts of Frangipani. I was there just two weeks ago. They have more green initiatives than any other hotels that I have been to. They even have their own organic farm for chicken and other birds and they grow their own fruit trees to serve the hotel guests for breakfasts (besides solar panels and rainwater collectors). The only drawback was that the guests rooms were a little tired, especially the bathrooms which will require major refurbishment. We have fed this back to management and they are well aware of this. Renovation is in the process and I think it is well worth staying here if you support eco-friendly hotels. The resort is located at Tengah Beach, just next to Cenang Beach, so you would have no problems finding food and alcohols!
Tanjung Rhu resort is really an understated resort. The rooms are big although in need of updating (which is ongoing at the moment). The staff were extremely friendly! I cannot praise them enough and their beach is the best on the island, stunning views! Food in this resort is also excellent, the all inclusive package is worth every penny. Never mind that it is far from the hot spots of Langkawi, you would love the exclusivity.
Tanjung Sanctuary is now a boutique resort on this island. We went there before it was taken over by the new owner. We also visited the resort last week after it has been renovated. It definitely looks a lot more impressive with the new look, but it also comes with a much higher price tag. I thought it was just slightly overpriced but the chalets in the jungle were really magnetic. I think once the whole place is done up, this would be a hot-seller. I am glad that I stayed there before all this renovation as it was such a charming resort. It only has one restaurant in the resort. So for anyone staying there, it would be a good idea to rent a car and find local eateries.
That's all for now, I will update my list as and when I have more information to share.
