We arrived in KL at 11pm about 2 hours later than expected. There was some big match, on at the stadium where the bus leaves us off. From here we planned on getting a LRT (underground train) to our hostel. It was soo late and we the place was so packed we decided to get a taxi.
The guesthouse we stayed in was very fancy. One of the nicest places we’ve stayed in ages. It was called sabatat guesthouse. Pity we only arrived around midnight and had to check out again the following day because they had no availability.
The receptionist called lots of places trying to find somewhere else for us to stay. No luck though so we just went out for a walk to see what we could find. Just around the corner we found another guesthouse with rooms. It was really not as nice but only a fraction of the price.
It was a brilliant sunshiny day so we headed out to explore. We walked around to the Golden Triangle to the KL tower and Petronas towers. These were all closed for climbing because of the special weekend that was in it (end of ramadan). Ah well. The
shopping centre in the towers were open though. Some great shops. Very fancy would really loved to have gone shopping. There was a band playing a flute and drums. He music filled the whole place. There was air con too so we hung around here for a good hour. Then we went out and joined the hundred other tourists trying to get the perfect pic.
On our wandering we found ourselves in the central market. This was a great little place where we got the dead skin eaten off our feet by fish, ate prawn noodles and got Yvonne’s hair cut. May I say hair cut included a head massage which was brilliant.
Yvonne with her new haircut insisted on going out for pints. She also wore her new shoes that she bought in Melbourne which haven’t been broken in yet. We walked around looking for a bar but couldn’t find any normal looking one. After about 20 mins Yvonne insisted we go into this really fancy looking one. Her feet were nearly bleeding in all fairness. We paid about £20 for 2 drinks and decided to call it a night.
The following day we decided to go and see
Batu caves which are 20km outside of town. We were advised that a monorail and train would get us there. On our way to the monorail station we realized how massive. Man Utd are here. Lots of people have jerseys and bags and big posters of players about the place.
The monorail and train we brilliant, it was a great people watching experience for Yvonne. So much diversity in the people, We were some of the few people in western dress. They were dressed differently from Budda Monks to Muslim Headscarfs. To hindu saris to arab white and kids in colourdy robes.
When we got off the train we headed towards the cave. On the way there was lads cutting open coconuts with axes. We bought one if just to reaffirm that we indeed do not like coconut. There were lots of steps up to the caves. With wonderful massive statues all round. It was really coulourful and informal. People were in great form and we ended up talking to lots of locals. Its surprising how many people here speak English it was great. Some locals asked to get there picture taken with us. I think we stand out as
Yvonne's BB pic
Not BB muffin. Yummy tho much here as we did in S.America. Gary the giant and Yvonne the blonde…Once we got to the top the caves were brilliant. Pure out of tombraider. What stole the show though was the crazy monkeys. They were jumping around everywhere, stealing anything that wasn’t held down. They were fighting with each other too. Quite aggressive little guys. We took about 1.5 million photos of these so I’ll just leave those explain the rest of the story.
On the way home in the train it started really lashing rain. We kinda had second thoughts about going to the night market that evening but decided it was worth getting wet for.
It took us a while to find our way to the market. It was not that it was hard to find but it was so wet we just kept going into random shops. We stopped to eat in a restaurant where they menu was in Malay. This is very strange. Mostly everything has been in English since we arrived in Asia. Gary ended up getting what he says were the best noodles ever, to me they looked like snails coming out of a cocoon. See picture and make up your
own mind. When we arrived at the market it was brilliant. Biggest market I’ve ever seen and I’ve been to quite a few markets. I bought what seemed like so much stuff. Even Perfume (such a luxury for a backpacker!). Got lots of other stuff we needed too. T-Shirts, dresses, wallets, flipflops. Swimming stuff and most importantly guidebook. it was all brilliant value. We didn’t get many pics because it was really packed and I’d say there were a few pickpockets about. We were all in great form. It was definitely one of the best days of holidays so far.
We went to bed that night exhausted and excited about the next leg of our trip to Borneo…
