And this was my mini pre-Xmas fishing trip cum one-day KL getaway, with a few of my friends (YK, X and RP), some of whom have made special "appearances" before on this blog. The kelong itself was called the "Hot Boys Kelong" (I don't even want to start to explain myself), and it was actually my second time there (...) Basically one of those fishing packages where you pay for board and lodging, which in this case was a creaky old single bed in dormitory-style accomodation, and simple seafood-oriented Asian meals. In return you get to fish from a kelong located in the middle of the sea, from a specially-constructed fish farm, with unlimited smelly squid bait. How could one miss? As I'd mentioned, this was my second time, so I kinda knew what to expect. ... read more

For my Grade 5 Excusion week we went to Palau Besar in Malaysia. Palau Besar is an Island of Mersing, Johor and is a tropical paradise with tree-covered mountains and white sand beaches. On the way there, we went on the PIE highway to the Tuas second link bridge, the longest bridge in Malaysia and Singapore. After we went through the check point (which had a wave hanger design), we went on the second link Tollway that connected with the North-South Fwy in Johor Bahru, the capital of Johor. We took that for awhile and then switched to the 3 to Mersing, the 3 went through fields of palm oil trees stretching toward the horizon. (The trees produce palm oil used to make plastic but in order to do that you have to release lots of Carbon Dioxide ... read more

Dzieki temu moge cos dziś znowu nastukac i dostarczyc lektury dziesiatkom oczu spragnionych wrazen z naszej podrozy :). Ok just kidding. To tylko dla Ciebie mamusiu. :) Malezja jest krajem razacych kontrastow. Miejsca sumiennie wysprzatane i wypolerowane sasiaduja tu z totalnym syfem. Zjedlismy więc nienajgorsze sniadanie w dworcowej kafejce zap... read more

“I just love living in a place that has four seasons…” Millions of times I’ve heard some variation of this utterance. It’s always delivered in that same dreamy tone that seems to imply that deep down inside everyone should feel this way. It's infuriating. I DO love one season, and I can tolerate some parts of two others. Winter and I however will never see eye to eye, and it’s hard for me to express just how happy I’d be if I never had to experience another day of it. Nothing bah-humbugs me more than winter coats, cold wet shoes, and snow. Many people get depressed in the winter; I feel downright outraged by it. The feeling I have when cold wind blows in my face might be compared to the feeling I get when I’m ... read more

We got up early to get the 10 o’clock bus to Mersing. It was lashing rain monsoon type stuff so we were happy to be getting out. The border crossing from Singapore to Malaysia was simple so much more straight forward and easy compared to some central/south America experiences. When we got off the bus in Mersing we met a nice lady who was selling Ferry tickets and accommodation on Tioman island. We picked a place called Panumba Resort mainly because this was near the only ATM machine on the island. Our credit card situation is a bit dire at the minute we’ve only 1 between us with a €500 euro limit. With booking flights and hostel this is constantly maxed. Our ferry wasn’t for a few hours so we went and got some dinner. Yvonne ... read more

This morning we are in Mersing; Johor Bahru, on our way back down to Singapore for tonight. After our stay in Kuala Tahan in Taman Negara, we made our way over to the East coast of Malaysia to start making our way down to Singapore again. Our first stop was Teluk Chempedak, a beautiful little coastal resort-like town, next to Kuantan. Unfortunately, on the way there, Paul got hit with his first (and hopefully only?) bout of food poisoning and thus had a horrible trip to Chempedak and 2 days hopping from toilet to toilet. Teluk Chempedak was a gorgeous place! Beautiful beaches and big smooth boulders, surrounded by jungle and rainforest, but on closer inspection, like most of Malaysia as we've found, it was dirty and smelly. Rubbish strewn everywhere, open sewers that give off ... read more

At this point we have been in Malaysia for over 10 days and South-East Asia for more than 2 weeks. I am proud to say that I have yet to need to use a squat toilet. This is a great success. The Singapore/Malaysia border must be one of the easiest borders to cross in the world. You can go by pretty much any mode of transport you can think, including city buses, long distance buses, trains, ferrys and i believe it is the only border in the world which can be crossed via taxi. The best option for us was to take the city bus across the border to the long distance bus terminal in Johor Bahru, the southern tip of peninsular Malaysia. Just the 2.40$ bus fare takes us to the Singapore immigration building, where ... read more

Hey-o Just a quick post to kick of the reincarnation of my travel blogging. No time for anything in depth so just a brief out line of where i am in case there is anyone left out there who is worrying about me. Me and Yumi left Aus on the 7th. Arrived in Singapore and stayed for four days. Today we crossed the border and are in Peninsular Malaysia. We're currently in a smallish town called Mersing on the East Coast. So far Singapore and Malaysia have been great. Pretty full on at times but people are generally friendly and the food is incredible, especially in Singapore. That's all I got now. I'll do a proper update as soon as, but time and internets are more scarce than i expected. Later... ... read more
