Laos was under the control of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century until the late 19th century when it became part of French Indochina. The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 defined the current Lao border with Thailand. In 1975, the Communist Pathet Lao took control of the government, ending a six-century-old monarchy. Initial closer ties to Vietnam and socialization were replaced with a gradual return to private enterprise, a liberalization of foreign investment laws, and the admission into ASEAN in 1997. We went to see a cultural show in the Royal Palace in Luang Prabang and got to see crazy animal costumes, dancing and traditional music.
Oh dear, it looks like the old travelblog has been falling a bit behind schedule. at the time of writing, i am in what appears to be a old prison cell at an internet cafe in northern vietnam, 18km from the southern chinese border, certainly not in laos where i left off. looks like i have a lot of catching up to do so please bear with me as i try to recollect hazy memories of beer, the heat, and very good (and very bad) food. if it is any consolation, i have been writing in my little journal like a [View Full Entry]

Today after arriving in Laos the night before, we set off for Luang Prabang. According to everyone we've met and to all the guidebooks LP is Asia's most charming city and we certainly hope so - we had a not so charming introduction to the Lao people in the form of the crazy hostel lady we met just this side of the border. Thankfully we'd already met a few of the Lao people, Boonlarn and Amy who were old workmates of mine & Tash's and Kevin - our buddy from Pai who attested to the country's reputation of producing lovely, laidback [View Full Entry]

We left Vang Vieng bright and early this morning, we got a truck for about 1.5 hours and then went Kayaking down the Mekong River for around 4 hours. Kayaking was well good,. I managed to capsize while going through some rapids!- was actually quiter refreshing though. We had lunch on some rocks by the rapids, our guide made us shish kebabs on a barbecue which were really nice. After a bit more kayaking we came to a stop by the riverside and were asked if we wanted to do a jump off some high rocks (About 15metres) into the water. [View Full Entry]

Sabaidee! Hey, thanks to all you readers and commenters out there and back home. We really appreciate all the support and the interest everyone is showing. Just bear with us, our time in Asia is slowly diminishing our ability to speak the King's English. I'm not even sure that any of you can even understand what I'm writing right now. Well, here's hoping: We are neither in Singapore nor Malaysia nor Thailand as some of you may have been expecting...we're actually across the Mekong River from Thailand, in the northern Laos capital of Vientiane. It's really not important why we didn't [View Full Entry]

My vacation in Laos

Asia » Laos » West » Muang Ngoi Neua
Hi, Since I had to return to China in the same way (only one border crossing between China and Laos) I did not want to travel too much. This is the reason that I have visited only few places. And also, I felt that I was in vacation from China, no need to rush, just relax and chill out. Almost all travellers in Laos, however, enter Laos from Thailand at one point, travel in Laos and then return to Thailand at another point. This is easy to do since Thailand and Laos have 6 border crossings. When I told people that [View Full Entry]

Laos - Day 1

 Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane
Got to Nong Khai around 6:30AM. Paid for visa and entry cards, etc. Cleared Thai immigration and crossed the Friendship Bridge into Laos. Cleared Lao immigration, hired a tuk tuk into Vientiane. Some random English guy asked to share the tuk tuk with us. Nice guy, antiques dealer who recently discovered the wonders of ebay. Checked into Orchid Guesthouse, it was a dump! Showered and went out to find new lodgings for the next day. Found a few possibles. Lunch at Noi Noi, just okay, nothing special. A tuk tuk driver on the corner offered to take us to Buddha Park [View Full Entry]

Backtracking...

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng
Hey I'm in Vang Vieng again....I might kayak back to Vientiane tomorrow because it's the only place with an ATM and I need some bucks to get me by until Cambodia. I've been hanging out with all kinds of interesting people and I've been sharing a room with a gal from Colorado named Erin here in Vang Vieng. Anyways, in Phonsavon I had the craziest experience ever. I stayed at a guesthouse in the shittiest room so far, but it was cheap. The owner was an educated Lao man and he had some interesting things to say. He actually spent [View Full Entry]

Ok guys, so we’ve upped sticks again and made our way to the small town of Vang Vieng. The journey here was noteworthy mainly for Jonny getting sick and almost throwing up on the Canadian girl he was sat next to. He claims that it was a result of the winding roads we were driving on, up and down mountains for about 6 hours. Personally think the 6 bottles of Beer Lao he had the night before didn’t really help the situation! Vang vieng is quite a big spot for backpackers now it seems. We keep spotting people we were on [View Full Entry]

26th February-We managed to get up at 620am and caught a bus at 8am from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. I was well impressed that we managed to get up at such a ridiculous hour (In Luang Prabang there were signs everywhere asking tourists to respect the local culture and be quiet after midnight, consequently life started for the locals at about 6am everyday, by the sounds of things life started at about 4am for the flaming roosters!). We arrived in Vang Vieng after 6.5 hour bus journey from Luang Prabang- there were some killer views along the way, and I [View Full Entry]

My month in Laos has come to an end; I head to Vietnam in the morning. I am real excited about Vietnam. Since I have been out here I have heard mixed reviews about the country, but after the extremely mellow atmosphere of Laos, I think I’m ready for something a little more fast pace. I am alone again, and that is a good thing as well. I had a great time with Neal and Claire, but we had our last night a few nights ago in the south, and I feel more adventurous now that I am on my own [View Full Entry]
