We could have stayed in Vang Vieng for another week but our time in Laos was running out, we wanted to go South to the 4000 Islands that is near the border to Cambodia were the river shallows and has created many islands both big and small. There are only a few islands that you can stay on and we picked a place called 'Don Det' which is one of the bigger islands. It really is back to 'basics' here, with basic accommodation, no ATM's or banks, a couple of restaurants and bars. Life on the island was very, very slow, not much to do here but relax..... Just what we needed.

We hired a bicycle and rode across Don Det and over to another island call Don Khon. We went to see the waterfall (the biggest in Asia) it was amazing, so powerful and strong. We ran into two local kids by the waterfall, they were so cute, smiling and talking little English. We took a couple of pictures of them on the camera and they were posing and pulling faces, when we showed them the picture on the screen they were screeching and laughing...I don't think they had seen a digital camera before.
It took us about an hour to ride there and back which I know doesn't sound far but in 40 degrees heat I thought I was going to pass out! :-)

As I said this place is very chilled and the bars shut at 11pm every night, we noticed that a lot of restaurants had closed for Khymer New Year which meant it was even quieter! The good thing was that the weather was really good and we certainly re-charged our batteries chilling out for the next few days.

But after a visit to Leamington to see my family, my cousin Rachel and her partner Pete got us really excited about their trip they had taken and showed us photos and clips. It looked really good and it was just something we had to do from that day on and the seed was planted. Ryan was made redundant which gave us the final push. Over the next year we researched and sa... full info

Laos was under the control of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century until the late 19th century when it became part of French Indochina. The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 defined the current Lao border with Thailand. In 1975, the Communist Pathe...more info
