Kyrgyzstan Travel Blogs

Kyrgyzstan is an impoverished ex Soviet country, since August 31, 1991. It is located on the east side of central Asia, bordering China. Mile upon mile of unspoilt Alpine esque mountains interspersed with icy lakes, yurt studded green summer pastures and towns and cities far apart make Kyrgyzstan a trekkers and campers paradise. Although the season is short because of heavy snowfall blocking many roads and passes for much of the year, Kyrgyzstan can be a tourists choice for its value for money, relative ease of obtaining a tourist visa and most importantly for some, a cutting edge travel experience.

Deployment Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Bishkek
After 2 months of predeployment in Fort Bragg, everyone was anxious to get to our destination. We left Fort Bragg and stopped in Leipzig, Germany to refuel. From there we flew to Manas Air Force Base in Kyrgyzstan on what was my birthday, in southwest Asia just north of Afghanistan. So both our stops were in what use to be communist East Germany and the former Soviet Union. Go figure. The scenery there was gorgeous, but it wasn't long after we left that the Kyrgyz Parliament voted to close the base after the they and the U.S. failed to agree on [View Full Entry]

Our stay in Kyrgyzstan began with a days rest, room service and video rental in Bishkek as both of our tummys were showing severe signs of shashlyk fatigue! We recovered reasonable well and then the next day managed to get ourselves out to Cholpon-Ata, a tourist town on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kol. Here we enjoyed the dramatic scenery, local fish and chips and I even managed a lovely swim in this lake some 1500m above sea level. Lake Issyk Kols literal translation is "the lake that never freezes" and despite the surrounding snow capped mountains, wasn't drastically cold, in fact [View Full Entry]

>>> DEUTSCHE VERSION SIEHE UNTEN ;-) Day 95 to 113 17,400 km from Galway This time we start our blog in English as some haven't realised so far that we have all our blogs in German AND in English. Just scroll down in the other blogs to see the English version ;-) After this necessary detour to Almaty we eventually took off to Kyrgyzstan (KG). We were really looking forward to discover this country. After all the Kazakh steppe without any real highlights, KG should have much more to offer for a change. With a big smile in our faces we [View Full Entry]

It's autumn here
Bishkek - colourful Osh Bazar
The yurt - a typical nomad's home

En route to Jalal-Aabad we stopped overnight in Naryn, another identikit Soviet town, devoid of character or interest. We joined forces with a french couple, and hired a car to take us the 350k to Jalal-Aabad. The journey was quite an undertaking. Our driver was extremely good, and his car a comfortable old Audi, which frequently sounded to be on the verge of breaking down. It was very hot and very dusty, and the windows had to be kept shut to keep the dust out, and, of course, the heat in! The roads were little more than tracks, often strewn with [View Full Entry]

Up, down, all around! Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Osh
Yes, for anyone who is wondering, we are still alive. Lack of internet cafe's and lack of patience on dial-up connections has contributed to our long silence! We have been in Kyrgyzstan since August 27th. It's a beautiful country with lots of mountains and fresh air. The country is not heavily populated and doesn't have big cities so we've been camping quite a bit. Pictures are not working for us right now... The application will not load properly. Maybe later we'll be able to upload some files... Tomorrow we leave for Uzbekistan. Another adventure! Here are some of the thing [View Full Entry]

Deeper into Kyrgyzstan Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Kochkor
We left Bishkek on September 1st, catching a bus to Kochkor, about 4 hours drive south. The bus was full, and with our luggage, 2 bags each, there was no room at all. A young woman immediately engaged us. She had just finished a month's intensive English conversation course, and was very keen to talk English! She turned out to be a great translator between us and the others on the bus, who were keen to know about us, and vice versa. It was our first real view of the countryside. After a spell driving along a valley- flat, cultivated in [View Full Entry]

Song Kul

With the visit to Song-Kul Lake changed due to the snow we had an extra day in Kyrgyzstan. Claire and Dave decided that with a name like Arslanbob we needed to go there ..... Reading the Lonely Planet it sounded like a beautiful place ...walnut forests all around.... a little Uzbek village that is trying to generate more tourism. This year they had 1300 foreign visitors to the village. Once again we headed west. This time we came out of the flat country and back into the hills. We were heading through the Fergana Valley. Arslanbob turned out to be [View Full Entry]

Bushcamping on the way to Osh Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Osh
We drove back to Kochkor as we resumed out journey west . It was a great day - driving around the southern side of Lake Issy-Kul. All day it was the lake to the right of us and spectacular snow capped mountains to the left. Everywhere you looked were awesome views. We stopped in a small town for lunch. There seemed to be only one cafe serving food in the town so I think we stressed them out somewhat when all 25 of us turned up to the same place (we usually try to lessen the impact by going to different [View Full Entry]

Return to Karakol Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Karakol
We were wet through from two days of rain. On the morning that we were due to leave Djety-Oghuz it actually snowed on us. When we looked up we realised that the snowline was now on the pastures that we had visited yesterday. We were due to head for Song-Kul Lake. The lake was another 1000m higher so we didn't think that we would be able to get in and out due to the snow. We decided to head back to Karakol and the warmth of Hotel Amir. We were able to dry out the tents and sleeping gear and have [View Full Entry]

Djeti-Oguz Asia » Kyrgyzstan » Karakol
We stayed the night in Karakol after Lake Issy-kul. A wierd place - orange and pink - it looks like a ski lodge but had the best beds .....and breakfast. Karakol was a great little town. Short drive from Karakol to Djeti-Oguz. Djeti-Oguz is about 25km away - at the mouth of the Djeti-Oguz Canyon. It has Red Sandstone cliffs - one was called the Broken Heart and the name Djeti-Oguz means nine bulls after the nine main bluffs (or maybe 7 bluffs). It was a beautiful day so we pretty much set up camp and took it easy by the [View Full Entry]
