Kyrgyzstan is an impoverished ex Soviet country, since August 31, 1991. It is located on the east side of central Asia, bordering China. Mile upon mile of unspoilt Alpine esque mountains interspersed with icy lakes, yurt studded green summer pastures and towns and cities far apart make Kyrgyzstan a trekkers and campers paradise. Although the season is short because of heavy snowfall blocking many roads and passes for much of the year, Kyrgyzstan can be a tourists choice for its value for money, relative ease of obtaining a tourist visa and most importantly for some, a cutting edge travel experience.

Finally back on my blog. It is not all that easy to conect and when so only limited time available so I appologise for the delay. Obtaining the Tajik visa was suprisingly easy thought as I went though a travel agency (only way for tourists to get hold of one) they charged me a lot. Wanting to travel to the more remote region of the Pamirs they require a further permit but having some time on my hands I decided to attempt to obtain it in Dushanbe (the capital). At the agency i met an american wanting to travel the 600km [View Full Entry]

Sorry no photos, the internet here in Bishkek is very slow and I couldn't use the laptop. It's a shame we had some beauties! What a difference a border crossing can make. After leaving Tashkent we spent a day driving through the beautiful and fertile Fergana Valley, quite a contrast to some of the desert type countryside we have seen and then on to the Kyrgyzstan border. From Minarets to mountains in a couple of days - no more majestic cities with tiled mosaic mosques, the cities are quite run down and Russian influenced with the exception of Karakol on a [View Full Entry]

I have arrived in Bishkek after 23 hours of travel from Houston to Newark, Newark to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Almaty, Kazakhstan, and a 2 hour car ride from Almaty to Bishkek. I was met at the Almaty airport by my friend's Father and two of his best friends, Sapar and Faruh, who were quite sleepy. The ride from Almaty was beautiful once the sun began to come up. Through the steppes and the foothills toward Bishkek. I am staying with the family of my good friend and spent the entire day after arrival either sleeping or eating. My young friend Timurlan [View Full Entry]

Off to Bishkek via Newark, NJ, Franfurt, Germany, and Almaty, Kazhakstan I am off on a two month-long adventure today that will take me to Central Asia and to parts of Kyrgyzstan That I did not see on my previous travels to this interesting small alpine nation. The flights take a number of hours. I leave Houston, TX, at 1 pm flying on Continental Airlines to Newark. From there I have about an hour and a half and a change of aircraft to Luthansa for an overnight flight to Frankfurt. Four hours later, I board a final aircraft for Almaty, KZ, [View Full Entry]

Preparing For Kyrgys Republic Trip I am preparing to travel to Bishkek, Kyrgystan, in about two weeks. I have traveled to Kyrgystan last summer and got to see a number of places. This trip will be a longer stay that will allow me to explore other areas and to learn more about this "Switzerland" or "Colorado" of Central Asia. I decided to blog on Travel blog about the trip to this small former Soviet Republic, because there a number of people who have had unpleasant experiences who have reported them here recently. My experiences have been different. My travels have been [View Full Entry]

Travelling Kyrgyzstan in April is like a big bosomed lady at the end of an aisle standing there in her wedding dress. Covered in white, you know if you commit to it, you can ski on those slopes and (unlike the feelings on a wedding night) soon it will be gone. It dangles its goodies with its curvaceous roads attached to its mountainous mould - And like the lady, it shows you this just in case you change your mind. But that’s the dilemma I had once I got here. I was like the husband to be, having second thoughts. If [View Full Entry]

Donkeys screeching, sheep baaaing, cows mooing, dogs barking, ducks quaking. These are not the sounds that bring skiing to mind. And only 3 years ago, here skiing was unheard of. If you ski here in the next few years you could be classed as a pioneer. I was the 25th person this year and one of the first 50 people ever in the history of the world to ski the mountains off Arslanbob. 4 hours from Osh after a series of shared taxis it is a place that is known locally as a pilgrimage. It is said that the Prophet Mohammed [View Full Entry]

Our extended stay in Kashgar and the delay in getting across the border has left us with little time to explore Kyrgyzstan. We don't manage to loop up to Bishkek and the lakes in the north east, but instead discover Osh, the second largest city of the country and centre point of the south in a country geographically and culturally divided by the Fergana mountain range. As we wander down the street we meet Bolot and Rinat, aka Bob and Rick (perhaps English names are as much of a requisite among the cool kids here as they are in China). They [View Full Entry]

Crossing borders in central Asia might not be quite as simple as inside the Schengen area, but as long as you have your papers in order and transport sorted out, it should be straight forward enough. Or so we thought, until it took us almost 48 hours to cover the 400km between Kashgar in China and Osh in Kygyzstan: Day 1, 07:00 Our driver picks us up and we head essentially due west from Kashgar towards the Irkeshtam Pass. We're in for a stunning five hour drive past beautiful scenery into the Tian Shan mountains that takes us over 3000m above [View Full Entry]

Mel The queues at the airport in Moscow were incredible. First a half hour in the passport queue even though I wasnt leaving the airport. Then I joined the 100M queue to get to the gates. It did not take so long to get to the top of it because some men decided that the ladies are to be first and cleared a path for me and a girl with long blonde hair. Then a bunch of guys came alone and tried to go through the gates before the ladies. The men in the queues asked them why they are not [View Full Entry]
