I came to Almaty with three very specific and intricately important goals for my trip: 1. Wander aimlessly, 2. Gorge myself shamelessly, and 3. Search for camels relentlessly. These lofty goals took me all over the city, into countless cafes and even into the countryside and I am proud to say, I was pretty productive during my time in Almaty. I spent much of my time on foot exploring the pedestrian friendly streets of Almaty in search of anything that interested me and in search of nothing at all. This unstructured quiet time allotted me the brain space to really observe the city around me and the people who call it home. Here are some of my very random and often insignificant observations: 1. The people of Almaty have a high expectation of cleanliness. I was ... read more

Oh it’s been an uphill battle to get here. Much more difficult that I expected. Sure there are lthe ong flights and language barriers and such, but the biggest reason for the extra effort? I wanted to go alone. Not alone with a tour group. Not alone and then meet with friends. Alone. Solo. No one else. Apparently, this is frowned upon in my family. Why would someone with loving friends and family choose to travel to a foreign country alone? I figure we might as well get this discussion out of the way, so we can get on to much more interesting things, like say, the beauty of Kazakhstan! Last year I decided I wanted the challenge, freedom and uniqueness of solo travel. I am not sure why, but it washed over me like a ... read more

As transport leaves when full we'd been told to leave our Bishkek hostel at 8am for the Almaty (Kazakhstan) minibus to ensure we got seats and that it would likely go by 9:30. We didn't quite buy into that so went a little later. The station was a much more civilised affair this time. We were early enough to watch 3 cases of scotch get hidden in a hole underneath the seats. By 9am we were on the road. By 10am we were in Kazakhstan. Marie held up the Kyrgyzstan exit queue when the immigration officer couldn't find her entry stamp (it is in there we made sure to check we'd been stamped as we entered) he processed her exit on the basis of Emma's entry stamp and then Emma's processing was delayed for some unknown ... read more

5-9-16 Our flight from Guangzhou crossed most of China before changing planes in Urumqi to arrive at Almaty in Kazakhstan at 8.30pm. Officially called the republic of Kazakhstan, it is the world's largest land locked country, with a land area larger than Western Europe. Our hotel the Rixos was more luxurious than we expected and we enjoyed a late supper in the beautiful lounge chatting with one of our fellow travellers. 6-9-16 in the morning we discovered Almaty has a great views of the Tian Shan Mountains, our guide told us Almaty is known as the cultural and commercial hub of Kazakhstan. Literally meaning 'rich with apples' the former capital is known as the 'Garden City' for its large parks and the alpine vistas of the Tian Shan Mountains that surround it. Our first stop was ... read more

Here is my last little stop in Kazakhstan. This time I'm arriving from Kyrgystan by the road. The people at my hotel nicely dropped me at the border. I just had to walk the few hundred meters to the border...smiling procedure....walk the bridge across the on the Chu River....and I was back for the third time in few days in Kazakhstan. I'm still 200km from the former capital that is Almaty. Was the third one in a big share taxi...good for me, the front seat is still available...and the ride will cost me only 6usd...not bad for 200km... Almaty is lodged at the feet of beautiful mountains. Sadly for me, the sky went from partly cloudy, to cloudy, even with few minutes of rain, so not a huge shot at those new buildings with snow capped ... read more

Day 107 Wednesday 4th May 2016 – Tashkent to Turkestan Last day in Uzbekistan, and we both have mixed feelings about leaving. Had a few more days left on our visa and was going to travel to some more regions but in the end decided to head off. Today we are once again crossing a land border and as usual we are apprehensive about what we might get. Hotel staff weren’t really a lot of help in giving us advice but they organised a taxi to take us to the border for 35,000 Som ($7 AUD). Tashkent almost sits on the border so it was only a 25 minute ride from our hotel to where the taxi dropped us off. Had to walk about 200 metres down the road to the Uzbekistan border control ... read more

Greetings from Almaty, Kazakhstan. Fall is in the air here and the trees are starting to change colors. We are getting into a routine now and adjusting to the new experiences that we are given. The hardest thing for me has been the language barrier, but usually someone is nearby willing to help, whether it be in a stranger in a store or a passer by on the street. The most fun is trying to buy something in a store. The salespeople all have calculators and that's how they tell us the price seeing we havent learned our numbers yet. They are big on security in the stores here both shoplifting and personal. Just inside most stores are lockers to put your big bags in when you go into a store. Also in some stores you ... read more

Almaty under blue skies and autumn sunshine. In the wide tree-lined boulevards, the leaves are turning orange and gold. To the north the city has an impressive backdrop, the Tian Shan mountains, rising to about 5,000 metres and already snow covered. It is our first Silk Road city and interestingly mixed. Many buildings date from the Soviet era, some are neo-classical and hugely imposing but others are grey and falling apart. Shinier are the new glass high rises, built with gold tops or points that make them look like little upright pencils. There is oil money here in this huge country, the 9th biggest in the world And there are, also, beautiful old buildings - churches and mosques mainly. Gaily painted or gilt domed, their beauty and craftsmanship are stunning and all the more impressive when ... read more

We leave on Monday to travel the Silk Route through Central Asia. We will start in Almaty in Kazakhstan and then travel on through Kyrgyzstan, then Uzbekistan and on to our final destination of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. On route we will be hiking and wild camping in the foothills of the Tian Shan mountains. At Song Kul lake we will stay in traditional yurts before a few nights with local families. Then onward to explore the fabled Silk Route cities of Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. Finally we will cross the wild Karakum Desert. We might also get to the state opera and see Carmen! Internet access could be a little intermittent but, whenever we can, we will be blogging.... read more

Restful night's sleep. We will be sleeping better tonight. Since we arrived in Almaty we have been so grateful for all the things the school has provided except... our mattress. It is the hardest bed we have ever slept on! We finally got a mattress topper. We asked around at the famous Almaty Green Market but we were misunderstood. One lady selling blankets and pillows got her son on the phone, who spoke great English and she wrote down on a piece of paper in Cyrillic what we were looking for. So a few stalls later we met Achmed. He was a doctor in Afghanistan and studied in Canada. He was more than helpful. In fact, before we knew it we were walking to his car and he drove us to a store - walked in ... read more
