Birthday bonanzaMaki, one of my students, is a Japanese animation artist. She created a card with Jessie in animation form -- a very thoughtful gift.
Jessie celebrated her birthday on the 29th, and what could have become a sad reminder of her being away from her family and friends turned out to be a wonderful experience and further proof that we are making some great friends here in Japan.
My tutees, Yoko, Maki and Shizu, along with our good friend Jason, threw Jessie a surprise birthday party last week. The celebration was thoughtfully planned, with cheesecake, KFC and other goodies, as well as the streamers and balloons befitting a birthday party.
The six of us just sat around at Yoko's house and talked.
But our friends in Japan were not the only ones kind enough to remember Jessie's big day. So she wants to send a big "thank you" to the people at Woodbury Elementary in Marshalltown, Iowa for their warm wishes and to our friends and family in Green Bay who sent goodies across the Pacific.
It was 72* and sunny here today. The leaves are browning and Mt. Fuji has a thick coat of snow on its peak. Autumn is a great time to be in Japan.
Great Party...Yoko put on quite the spread... she has come to understand the way to Jessie's heart

Happy belated birthday, Jessie! I'm glad your friends gave you a birthday to remember!
Jessie,
Happy belated birthday! I'm so glad you had a good time, it looks like it was a lot of fun. And yes, they have learned the way to your heart ... KFC, yum, yum!
Today in Mtown we await the arrival of Ryan and Jody Brinks' new bundle of joy. We have yet to find out if it's a boy or a girl ... we're (or I guess I'm) ready to burst from the excitement. The guys in the office are pretty laid back about it. I'll keep you two posted though.
I enjoy your blogs so much! April
Gary's birthday is the 29th too! Now I'll think about you on that day as well! I'm glad to hear you had a meaningful b-day away from home!
