come on and SLAM!
I wasn’t originally planning on updating until after Pieter and the gang came up and we had a few adventures, but the last few days have been amazing—I’m absolutely compelled to post. I’ve also been updating my photosite like mad, and finally had to buy a paid account. It’s the same web address, though.

So after a busy week (I’m actually doing work!?), I decided it was about damn time to blow off some steam. I’m never going 4 days without partying again. Saturday was supposed to be the IES community service project where we clean up litter and all that, but since it rained, some friends and I went to Ryogoku. Ryogoku is pretty much a town that was established by and for Sumo wrestling. Since May is the height of Sumo season, we ended up buying tickets to one of the biggest tournaments of the year! We were totally nosebleeding it, but I guess we were lucky just to get tickets. You could hear these enormous men’s bodies slap together from the upper-deck! It was awesome—but at the same time a little hard to watch. Some guys really got beat badly.

So after a few

hours of skin slapping together and 400 pound men tumbling to the floor, I needed a drink. I met my friends Jordan and Dane in Ueno—a pretty popular area of Tokyo and went bar-hopping. Bar-hopping in Tokyo is always interesting, no matter what. The first bar we found was an underground German pub. We drank lager and watched futbol while listening to everyone around us speak Japanese. After walking around Ueno for a little bit, we found another European pub (English), not because it was Euro, but because it was close and out of the rain. AND that’s when our night got better. On my way out of the really narrow entrance to the bathroom, I had to ask a girl to move out of my way, which I did in Japanese. She (and her three cute friends) thought it was astonishing that a white guy could speak Japanese in an English pub. So we got to talking, and it turns out they’re all college juniors who go to school not 45 minutes from where I live. I ended up getting all of their numbers right away (yay!) and we decided to pull and all-nighter at a karaoke club! I

guess 21 years of bad luck with women can turn itself around in an instant. So I asked if my friends could come too, and we were off. We ended up singing Japanese songs (and random songs by the Beatles) until close to 6am! And the best part: I got a date with the REALLY cute one who doesn’t speak any English! I still can’t believe all of that happened. Unreal.

And things just keep getting better. Pieter Sibal and co. are coming out from Minneapolis and are going to stay in Tokyo for 8 days! I’m pretty much not going to be in class all week. Which I’m a little nervous about—but then I realize that my best friend from home and I are going to be in TOKYO together. I feel like that’s pretty much a once in a lifetime chance, so I gotta make the most of it. I’ll definitely have some stories to tell while he’s here! Speaking of which, I should finish hanging my laundry so I can head out to the airport.

I hope everyone is happy and healthy!

take care.
