We left about 9 am this morning and were dropped off at the local train station. We took a local train to chiba, changed trains and finally on to Tokyo central station. I asked Amanda’s mom when the last time she was in Tokyo and she said it was something like 27 years ago! Once we got there we turned in our rail pass vouchers and decided to just stash our stuff in a coin locker and start wandering around the nice air conditioned mall. All malls here are underground. The weather is pretty humid, but it’s not as bad as Wisconsin though. We went on to find a 7/11 and get a snack; this is one of my favorite places to eat. They aren’t like the 7/11 back in the states, they carry actual food, ... read more

So here we are- the first day in a long journey, the first step in running a marathon- Tokyo! After successfully arriving from our 11.5 hour flight from LAX, we managed to navigate the subway correctly and make it to our hostel- K's House Backpackers in Asasakusa. It was night and we had just enough time to walk around and discover a really cool temple located just around the corner. We didn't find out until later that this was one of the best temples in all of Tokyo. We were in bed by 9:30pm that first night planning to relax and sleep in the next day. Unfortunately, jet lag would not let this happen and Jeff and I were both up, wide awake in our bunks by 4:45am. Since we were awake- we decided to get ... read more

Back in June, Todd and I visited Tokyo with the explicit purpose of planning his brother Troy's bachelor party. Todd wanted to throw him a swanky, international bash, so the biggest and most expensive city in the world certainly fit the bill. This was our fourth trip to Japan in a matter of months but neither of us had ever been to Tokyo. Our arrival was not as smooth as usual, simply because traversing the largest city in the world is neither cheap nor brief. It took us almost two hours to reach our hotel in Akasaka, at which point Todd, who cannot count patience as a virtue, nearly self-destructed. Luckily, our boutique hotel was fabulous and nestled in a trendy area. It was great to be back in the land of motion sensitive escalators, streets ... read more

I wasn't planning to go to the Sanja Matsuri Festival today but it was so lovely when I woke up I decided what the hell, maybe I would go stand amongst piles of people in a huge crowd and see what Japanese festivals are all about. It was soooooo much better than I could have anticipated - true it was crowded but as I was by myself I managed to push my way through to the best spot to meet my friend Jane. A note from Wikipedia: The Sanja Matsuri ("Three Shrine Festival"), or the Sanja Festival, is one of the three great Shinto festivals in Tokyo, along with the Kanda Matsuri and Sannō Matsuri, and it is considered one of the wildest and largest. Its purpose is to honor Hinokuma Hamanari, Hinokuma Takenari and Hajino ... read more

Hello Friday 11th April Akasaka, Tokyo I know it is a bit late but i did arrive safe and sound friday morning. My room at the Juyoh Hotel is traditional and basic. After settling in i decided to go for a walk in the area of Akasaka. In Akasaka i found a market full of stalls. There was even a stall just for chopsticks. So i had to buy a fancy pair. At the end of the market was the Senso temple, here i saw lots of people praying and giving money. The local people clense themselves before enetring the temple by either standing by the fire a letting the smoke cover them or washing there hands and mouths in a holy fountain. Don't worry i took lots of photos and will up load the soon! ... read more

Up later this morning after our big day and late night, thankfully the weather must have had the same idea as our first three days of bright sunshine have turned to grey drizzle. Head across to Shimbuya for a late breakfast whilst watching the famous crossing. Sadly the crowds weren't quite playing along so the crossroads were a bit uninspiring so instead we turned our attention to all things shopping. As well dressed as your average Japanese girl or guy is, they certainly take things very seriously so the stores don't tend to be the kind of places you can just drop by and pick up one or two things without going for a whole look. There is also the small issue or pretty hefty price tags to keep enthusiasm at bay. Did manage to ... read more

September 21, 2007 Day One My oh my... We just landed in Tokyo hours ago and we are still recovering from the flight...It was a long, direct flight from JFK. Prior to the trip I had spoken with some friends who had flown to Thailand direct on luxurious, cushy planes and landed well fed, rested, and spoiled. So, anticipating our ride I was hoping for the same, after all, fourteen hours is a long time and our final destination was Thailand with Tokyo just being a souped up lay-over. Boarding the double decker air bus I pictured myself blissfully resting easy on our way to our destination as we passed lazyboy type accommodations in Business class. Of course i knew that our seats wouldn't be that plush, but they couldn't be that far behind, because that ... read more

Trouble with my tour to Japan began early on when I decided that I didnt want to visit shrines or temples. With that taken out of the equation, well, it didnt leave a lot left to do except shop. Having underestimated the extent of shopping (and the Japanese ability to pry money out of your hands by any means)... my credit card now has a serious dent and has gone into hiding. Its back to shrines and temples... but who really wants to read about that... Back to my Reading between the lines guide to Japan.
