23/08/2012 Re-set my alarm this morning to allow an extra 15 minutes. So weary this first week back at school. At school, Kaori’s daughters played with the Pandas: the Pandas LOVE having these big girls to play with them! This morning after practicing our Christmas songs during Mat Time (the Pandas requested to sing Bugs and Beetles without my help, and they remembered all the moves!), we made clown masks, but the kids referred to them as Grandpa masks. We stuck crazy things to the head of the mask to act as hair or a hat. Cate dropped by the school and lent me basically all the gear I need to climb Mt Fuji. Like many a foolish tourist, I was just going to wing it, but after reading some actual accounts online, and some people ... read more
My apologies to my readers for not posting any blogs for over a month now. I have been without internet till last Monday, and since then have been reorganising my life and catching up on things I haven't been able to do. I must also apologise for the number of rants that are to follow in the next few blogs as I complain about my lack of internet, but I haven't been without internet since I lived in Vietnam, and even then the internet cafes were closer than the bike ride to my old apartment to steal the internet there, so I now consider 'internet' to be a daily necessity. After all, we do live in the 21st century!... read more
Monday 16/07/12 I had expected to have to get up and clean the apartment this morning, but with everything sorted last night, I got up to have a relaxing morning before popping over to Kazumi’s to go to Mari’s shop to buy a Yukata. We picked up Dominica and Cate and Mikio, and drove to Mari’s other shop the other side of the city. There were so many antique kimono and antique yukata, the colours were delicious to the eye. I picked out two yukata with butterflies on them, one dark purpley blue, the other a bright blue. I couldn’t decide! They both looked fantastic. The bright blue went really well with my eyes, but didn’t seem as formal, although it did seem more summery. The dark blue/purple looked more mature, and made the bright red ... read more
Of Panda Parents Day, and of being a local tour guide
Published: July 26th 2012Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » ShizuokaWednesday 18/07/2012 Panda Parents Day Up early and at work at 8.30am to do an extra clean and tidy up of the classroom before the parents arrived. Luckily I did get there early, as the Juku staff the night before left a real mess, the biggest they’ve ever left. Chairs and tables were strewn around the room, and an extra table was left in there, and the bin was filled to the brim with newspapers! Annoying, annoying, annoying! Especially since I always leave the class tidy in the afternoon, always! Had the kids pack up early and put the TV on to keep them from playing with the toys and making a mess before the parents arrived. We started Mat Time at 10.20pm, and sung both the Crocodile song and Baby Face. The kids did me ... read more
Fuji Q (or the tale of how Alison screamed her little heart out whilst Tristan laughed)
Published: July 26th 2012Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » ShizuokaSaturday 21/07/2012 We were up at 5.15am and on the bus at 6.02am. Surprisingly, there were quite a few people on the first bus into the city of all ages. Arrived in the city at 6.30am and had time to have a Japanese Macca’s breakfast: I had a chicken muffin, and Tristan some monstrosity about four times the size of my measly muffin. We got on the bus, expecting to pay, but didn’t have to, and slept for about an hour before the bus stopped to refuel, we got off and there was a lady with a little stand and tickets there for us to purchase. It was then a further hour on to Fuji Q, the huge bus only had about 8 people on it! When we arrived, Tristan realised that shorts and a t-shirt ... read more

International BBQ, Asabata celebrity athlete, and game shopping
Published: July 26th 2012Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » ShizuokaSunday 22/07/2012 Tristan and I had considered going to either Osaka or Nagoya today, but we slept in, and even still were very tired. Also, we would want to be back around 4pm for Yukie’s BBQ. Instead we rode our bikes up to the Lemon Shop, and then onward to the Orange Shop (I haven’t been there before), to pick up some little cups to make frog-in-the-pond. (Tristan brought over a bag of Freddos from Australia.) By the time we got back from the bike ride and started on the frog ponds and pavlova, my watch stopped, and we missed the time, so we were an hour late to the BBQ, carefully balancing a warm pavlova and twelve frog ponds on our bicycles! There was so much fantastic food, including a couscous salad, prawns, sushi, hamburgers, ... read more
Why bother to rain when the air is like a swimming pool?
Published: July 16th 2012Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » ShizuokaThursday 12/07/2012 This morning for Mat Time, I skipped the awful Taiso routine and went straight into songs. By the time the last bus gets changed, I only have 15minutes for Mat Time, and this is only three times a week. So, I have 45minutes a week to teach five songs for the Christmas concert, whereas the Music teacher gets two half hour lessons a week with groups of 7 or 8 kids to teach one song. Not to mention that I’d also like to teach some other things to the kids apart from songs! The kids love Baby Face, though it has taken longer to grow on them than Never Smile at a Crocodile. I just get them to listen to Crocodile Rock during the day and at lunch time, and they absolutely love singing ... read more
Saturday 14/07/2012 Had a glorious sleep in till 10, the longest I’ve had in so long! Then it was straight into tidying up the house. The vacuum cleaner blew up after two minutes of vacuuming up my hair off the floor, well, ‘blow up’ sounds dramatic compared to what actually happened. It just calmly turned itself off and refused to turn back on. So then I had to sweep the floor with a tiny dustpan and brush. Takes much longer, not nearly as effective, and is back-breaking. I popped out to do my shopping, but half way down the road realised that I needed to go back home and lather myself in sunscreen, my skin was starting to sizzle. Checked out the tiny bottle shop down the street from me, and found it to be almost ... read more
Sunday 15/07/2012 It was up and at ‘em this morning and out the door to catch the bus to the city. As I walked down the road I saw one leaving, so it was half an hour to the next (weekend timetable), so I walked back up the street to get a notebook and take some casual happy-snaps along the way. At the bus stop a girl and her little brother had a little giggle at me before we all got on the bus. The bus was freezing cold: it says it is at a constant temperature of 25degrees, but I’m sure it was much colder. My skin was prickling after being in the sweltering humidity. Got off at Shin-Shizuoka Station and walke my way down ‘Gofukucho’ the unfortunately named shopping strip street, and popped into ... read more
Monday 9/07/2012 Adjusting to the strange sounds of this new apartment, the wirr of the refrigerator, alarm clocks of upstairs neighbours, sounds of people walking on the street, and so after a restless two hours, I got up at 7am. I also woke up late last night with a throbbing headache, so strong that I thought someone was gripping my head. No kettle here, so I’m regretting not bringing mine over yesterday, I left it till last to pack, as nothing is worse than not being able to have a cuppa when moving. Ah well. Spent the morning blowing up my world globe for the Pandas to play with. They mostly just throw it around the classroom, but now and again I spot some of the kids checking out the different countries. Quick walk to work ... read more
