Background: In 1603, a Tokugawa shogunate (military dictatorship) ushered in a long period of isolation from foreign influence in order to secure its power. For 250 years this policy enabled Japan to enjoy stability and a flowering of its indigenous culture. Following the Treaty of Kanagawa with the United States in 1854, Japan opened its ports and began to intensively modernize and industrialize. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japan became a regional power that was able to defeat the forces of both China and Russia. It occupied Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), and southern Sakhalin Island. In 1933 Japan occupied Manchuria and in 1937 it launched a full-scale invasion of China. Japan attacked US forces in 1941 - triggering America's entry into World War II - and soon occupied much of East and Southeast Asia. After its defeat in World War II, Japan recovered to become an economic power and a staunch ally of the US. While the emperor retains his throne as a symbol of national unity, actual power rests in networks of powerful politicians, bureaucrats, and business executives. The economy experienced a major slowdown starting in the 1990s following three decades of unprecedented growth, but Japan still remains a major economic power, both in Asia and globally. In 2005, Japan began a two-year term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Climbing Mt. Fuji Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » Mt Fuji
We are leaving Kawaguchiko station with the first bus going to Mt. Fuji 5th Station at 9:40AM. It's already quite late since the regular season is just over (ends on August 31st). For the same reason, the last bus leaves rather early too, so we cannot go up and return on the same day, which means we have to stay on the mountain. Weather and mood are good, so we start to climb up aby 11AM. The trail starts gently and there are many many mostly young Japanese people on the track. After about one hour we have a first rest, [View Full Entry]

Monks on Mt. Fuji
Walking up the Mars

As the popular Japanese saying goes: "The man who climbs Mt Fuji once is wise. The man who climbs Mt Fuji twice is a f**king psychopath". Ok, that isn't quite how it goes. But sometimes such language is just plain necessary. Please understand me - I love hiking. I love trekking. It's one of my favourite things to do. What I have discovered I do NOT like is walking 3000m up a volcano in the middle of the night at the same time as about 200,000 other people. But I get ahead of myself... I had planned to get the train [View Full Entry]

Fuji-San Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » Mt Fuji
Ah, Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan at 3776 m. One reason I decided to climb it is that one of my favourite restaurants back home is called Fujiyama. Also, after a few days of only Tokyo, I was itching to get moving. I planned it out perfectly. I would take a direct bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchi-ko fifth station, the most common starting point for the climb. I would rent a locker and deposit my stuff there. I would begin the 8 hour climb at 9:30 pm and I would arrive at the summit for sunrise the next morning. [View Full Entry]

Mountains of the mind Asia » Japan » Shizuoka » Mt Fuji
A wise man climbs Mt Fuji once, a fool twice Mt Fuji is one of the few mountains to have a proverb about it and it is repeated in a self-deprecating manner by those who have climbed it more than once. Self-depracation is the humour of the humourless, and generally comes across as an attempt at lame conversation. To each country its obsession and to Japan it is climbing Mt Fuji quite like avoiding all sorts of strenuous physical activity in India(self-deprecation?). Almost everybody in Japan has tried it or at least thought of trying it . I first visited the [View Full Entry]

Half way to the 6th station

For two months during the year, Mt. Fuji is open to climb. Last Friday was "Opening Day". I say climb, but really I anticipated more of a hike. And to be honest, I don't know how to climb anyway, so it was either going to be a steep hike or it wasn't going to happen. My training consisted of some treadmill work and lunges; there were no ropes or crampons or caribiners. There's a saying in Japan that a smart man will climb Fuji-san once, but only an idiot would climb it twice. I'm not sure about the first half of [View Full Entry]

Today i am off to Lake Saiko to do some exploring & caving. Basically Mount Fuji is surrounded by 5 different Lakes. Lake Kawaguchiko being the largest. Lake Saiko is the second largest & also the most beautiful. In order for me to get to Lake Sai, i need to catch the retro bus. The retro bus only runs once every 30minutes until 12pm & then once every 1 hour thereafter. I catch the bus at around 10am. it takes about 45 minutes to get to my location & the journey is wondeful. The scenery is very picturesque! My first stop [View Full Entry]

I stumbled back to the ship at about 5:25 on Friday morning (long story, we can talk about it later if you really want to know) to get ready for my trip to Mount Fuji and Hakone that would depart at 7am. One good thing about being up that early (or rather not going to sleep until then): the sunrise pictures are pretty great. So anyway, I got back to my room, showered, and ate breakfast before running back down to the terminal to make the bus. I passed out on the ride there despite the fact that our tour guide [View Full Entry]

After a long train journey involving 4 changes & lots of stopping I arrive at Kawa' in the late afternoon. I get the free bus to the hostel, check in, take my things to my room, make my bed, the usual shit and head out to get some munchies. I'm freakin' starving marvin! There is a 24 hour mixed cafe at the end of the road and decide to eat there. I'm so hungry i end up ordering about 4 different things off the menu, accompanied with a beer & pop. I still haven't managed to get it into my brain [View Full Entry]

This blog is dedicated to my good friend Andy - who basically told me that if i didn't go to Fugi-Q (which i bloody would've anyway) he'd disown me...Well that is my translation of it. ;-) It's 6am and i'm awake, bright & early and not even tired!...I get up, take a shower, check the emails and head out for an early breakfast @ the cafe. No 2,000yen breakfasts for me...haha After my double-egg, sausage, bacon, salad & toast special (I fuckin love double-egg), I head off to Kawaguchiko station to catch the mini-rail to Fugi-Q.
