The beginning of April is Hanami season in Japan and I don't think it's any sort of exaggeration to say that the Japanese (and foreigners) look forward to this time of year more than any other. The hanami (sakura and plum trees in full bloom) are stunning. I was lucky enough to see them in my own area, as well as near Tomida Stn., and then in Kuwana, Kyoto, and Koyasan (Wakayama Prefecture). It's very popular for people to go in groups to parks for a picnic under the trees. This generally includes lots of food (sometimes even a BBQ!) and alcohol. I went to three or four of these picnics and they were all a great time! Some places even have a special festival to celebrate the hanami. Near Tomida Stn. on the Kintetsu Line ... read more

Any foreigner who has stayed in Japan for any length of time will at some point encounter Japanese racism. 99% of the time it isn't overt. As a general rule, Japanese people tend to avoid confrontation so their brand of racism is more subtle. It comes in different forms - staring, inappropriate touching, cutting in front of you in line, refusing to sit next to you on the train, the free use of the term 'gaijin' (foreigner) etc. I've noticed pretty much all of the above (with the exception of inappropriate touching) but such is life when you move to a uni-racial country. Being a foreigner (particularly a white, light haired, green/blue eyed, well endowed foreigner) you stick out like a sore thumb. The way I see it, there are really two ways to approach the ... read more

Today was a really, and I mean really, slow day at work. The students are all in exams so I quite literally had NOTHING to do all day. I graded papers but you can only do that for so many hours before you want to stab the pen into your eyeballs instead. Wound up heading over to the library with the intention of talking to one of the teachers but chatted with a few students instead. They are all studying their asses off for their exams. I feel bad for them. A couple were telling me the other day about how they haven't slept in days. :( They take test scores SO seriously here. It is actually the only part of their grade that actually counts. They do assignments in class, they participate and do homework ... read more

Despite a distinct lack of snow, it only takes on short trip to Nagoya to solidify that the Christmas Season has indeed arrived in Japan. You wouldn't know it out in my quiet shanty town, but in the big city there are lights and Christmas trees galore, skating rinks in the shopping mall and Christmas music playing in every other store. It was almost like being back at home - but not quite. One huge difference between Japan and home is that here is about 10 degrees warmer and there is a distinct lack of snow. I have yet to see a drop, in the sky or on the ground. Despite the lack of snow, I still managed to get a good chunk of my Christmas shopping done. Managed to grab some presents for Sara to ... read more

Not much crazy, new or interesting news to report. I submitted my thesis to my supervisors yesterday so this is my first official weekend of freedom. I lived it up by sleeping in till 10 am and then watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy (Thank God for torrents and the internet!) The weather has gotten a LOT warmer here! It's in the 20s today for sure. I was out in a t-shirt and had to open all my windows to get some air through the house. Perfect day for laundry (yes, I'm doing that too hahaha) It's pretty strange getting used to having no drying. My washing machine is one of those spin washers we used to have at the cottage. It gets the clothes mostly dry, but you still have to hang them up. Good ... read more

Sorry guys, I know it's been a little while since I had an update but I had some really nice pictures to post so I thought I'd do one today :) Today I went with some of the other ALTs in the area over to Kuwana for their flower festival. Its held at this big botanical garden near Nagashima Spaland so it was super easy to get to. The flowers themselves were amazing! I can only imagine what they are going to look like in the Spring. Despite it being a lot colder today than it has been so far this Fall, there were still quite a few flowers in full bloom out in the gardens. You would not believe how big these things are! I had to take a picture of one next to me ... read more

In Gifu Prefecture there is an old walking trail that connects the two towns of Magome and Tsumago. My school took all the first year students on a class trip there today and I got to go with! It was a perfect day for hiking - a bit cool but not too hot and SUNNY! The hike itself was 8 kms long, most of it uphill, but it was totally worth it! The scenery was beautiful and it was a really good opportunity to talk to my students outside of class. I even ended up making 'friends' with students from a neighbouring school in Toyota City (like the car) in Aichi Prefecture. They followed me down the trail asking me different questions in English, which was really impressive I thought. They said I was 'Too Cute-to' ... read more

This weekend my status update on Facebook was "Orphanage on Saturday, Marathon on Sunday... busy!" No kidding. This past weekend flew by! I'm feeling pretty tired this week but it was totally worth it! The orphanage on Saturday was simply amazing. The kids had organized a sort of festival with food and dances and invited the community to come join. We weren't sure what to expect going in, but they were all very sweet and eager to play with us. I wish my Japanese had been better so I could've talked to the kids more, but I managed to start a sweet arm wrestling battle and they really liked the stickers I brought so that definitely made me happy. If we're able to do more visits hopefully my Japanese will improve each time. I've been studying ... read more

Just got in from my weekend spent in Akita visiting Jim for Canadian Thanksgiving (helpfully dubbed by said boys as "Fake Thanksgiving"). I had a total blast! I'm exhausted today but it was well worth it. The ALTs there were super nice and the weather was so chilly it felt like I was back in Canada. It was exactly what I needed this weekend. We spent a lot of time there eating and going out to bars. I was told many times that that is all you can really do in their town - drink and eat. It's not so bad though, really. The food was deeeelicious and the bars were great too! They even have an international beer bar there that has beers from all over the world. I wound up drinking some fruit flavoured ... read more

So it would figure that my first landfall typhoon experience in Japan wouldn't just be any old run of the mill typhoon. It has to be a super typhoon - Typhoon Melor to be exact. The first typhoon to make landfall in Japan in over two years (in October, no less!) This thing barreled directly into my prefecture at about 4 this morning. We were right in its path so we had about a month's worth of rain dumped on us in a couple of hours and a ridiculous amount of wind. My apartment was actually trembling. Granted, I'm on the side that got the brunt of the wind, and in the end unit, but still - it's made of concrete! Anyhoodle, after taking some videos with my cell and peeking my head outside to see ... read more
