Thursday, 22nd October 2015 After travelling about an hour on the iconic Ibusuki-no-Tamatebako train with a stopover at Kiire Station, I finally reached the seaside town of Ibusuki. I liked that we were given a warm welcome by the local people as soon as our train pulled into the platform. The train journey was eventful with the stewardess going around the cabin taking pictures for us. From the station, I hopped onto a local bus which brought me straight to the gates of Saraku Sand Bath. This was the reason why I was here today - to experience the sensation of bathing under the heat of volcanic ash by the sea. As touristy as it sounds, this was a well-managed place where English signage was prevalent to orientate users around the place. After changing to my ... read more

Thursday, 22nd October 2015 For my day trip from Kagoshima to Ibusuki city today, I booked my train seat on the Ibusuki No Tamatebako Express. The train plies the hourly journey between the two cities three times daily. This is a really popular sight-seeing train which I soon realised as it was filled with excited passengers who were busy snapping pictures. The interior of the train is made up of premium teak material (which created a really warm atmosphere) coupled with unique swivel chairs that resemble that of a hair salon. I made my seat reservation for the 9.58am train the day before at the ticket office with my Kyushu Pass. This was easily done and as the train started making its way towards Ibusuki, I was pretty sure that the journey was as interesting as ... read more

Day 8 Makurazaki to Ibusuki Dist 39 miles. Ave. 13.5. Ascent 687m Today was a relatively low mileage but was packed with activities. Straight from the hotel we were faced with a steady gradient for one mile before being brutally assaulted by a harsh climb up through the tea plantations which started at about 100 m above sea level. We were amazed how wide the bushes were and the narrow gap between them, in contrast to those in India and China. We were soon to find out why when we saw a track laying machine cutting the leaves in fine fashion at walking speed and blowing them into a hopper. We were informed that this is done every four weeks and produces a lower grade tea than the hand picked leaves since they cut a bit ... read more

Well up early and off on another train journey - glad we got the Japan Rail passes as we have really used them. Anyone going to Japan you must purchase these outside of Japan and I can honestly say it will save you an absolute fortune (this is my advice for today! see also getting wise whilst in Japan). I had decided that we were going to experience an onsen and also a natural sand bath. Well after and 1 1/2 hour train journey and then transfer by bus for another 10 minutes we arrive at Ibusuki Sunamushi Onsen. Mike is really apprehensive by now and is thinking what the hell has she roped me in for this time. Up the escalator we go and join the queue. The lady then takes our money and gives ... read more
