Arg. Aufgrund des starken ... read more

We hopped over to the seaside town of Fukuoka for a quick weekend trip at the end of February. We got there in the early morning and checked in to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in an area called Hakata. As usual, we found the weather outside of South Korea much more agreeable! We hopped on the subway and checked out some of the city's famous shrines and temples. The most recognizable is Kushida Shrine, which was originally founded in 757. We found a very lively restaurant for dinner, where the staff was super friendly and many customers approached us to say hello and practice their English. We had sashimi, yaki soba, crab, and sweet pumpkin with fish. Some of our new friends invited us to join them upstairs after our meal. Most of them spoke no ... read more

School was all fun and games last week… mainly because about half of my classes were cancelled so I spent hours on the internet researching my trips to Kyoto and Tokyo! I have started dreading lunchtimes, though, as there is this really strange girl at school who acts like she’s seen a celebrity whenever she sees me… I mean she literally gets all giggly and hysterical and I sometimes think she’s so excited and overwhelmed that she might even cry - serious! She can’t speak a word of English and just repeats everything I say, followed by a nervous giggle! I’m running out of things to say to her now and when I sit there quietly at my desk eating my lunch, she just stands next to me and stares… and then giggles some more - ... read more

On Friday night, Laura and I decided to cook for Gareth, James and Tom at their house and, as they don’t finish work until 9, we thought we’d head round early to make a start on it… they never lock their front door so it was easy to let ourselves in! The boys must have thought all their Christmases had come at once when they arrived home to find Laura and I waiting for them with some delicious food all laid out on the table! On Saturday, we set off for Fukuoka and met Mindy in Marinoa City shopping centre… we wanted to go on the huge ferris wheel there but it was sooooo windy that they’d stopped people from going on it. Instead, we had to settle for a Starbucks and a gossip (just for ... read more

Drawing so close to the end that I can almost feel the stench of the horrible airline-omelet already. Still, I have one more string to play before the bungy-cord inevitably swings me back across the frozen tundras of Siberia all the way back home to a dreary, miserable and cold November. Still, the good thing about an elastic cord is that it really doesn't manage to keep you in place for long. Anyhow, although I could have made this a fairly lazy day I was determined to end it on a high, and my trip to Kyushu island really could not be considered complete unless I topped it with le grand finale de la Kyushu Basho. In other words, ladies and gentlemen, it is time for a sumo blog again! Although I woke up with a ... read more

the last 4 days seem to have merged into one very long day with very little sleep! ... but what fun i've had! on thursday... laura and i went out with a few of our friends for gareth's birthday. we went to a delicious restaurant where we got lots of free sushi and sashimi (as the owner knows gareth really well). we all enjoyed a few drinks there whilst waiting for our friends (from training) to arrive - they should have arrived in saga around midnight but neither laura nor i had heard from anyone by then. the guys who were coming to stay with me eventually rocked up at about 2am so we met them in a bar and continued to have a few drinks with them... the girls staying with laura didn't arrive until ... read more

My fifth and last consecutive Kyushu basho visit, you should know the ropes by now, so let's take a look around the arena to see if there is something else to catch your eye. Being a friday afternoon, the Kokusai Center really started to fill up with people coming straight from work, as the last bouts went the mood was quite high. For me it was a bit of each, tomorrow morning I'll be off to Nagasaki so I made good use of my last day in the arena.... read more

For those of you who don't like sumo; tough luck - we're turning up the temperature a couple of degrees today, so you might as well stop reading and hit the next journal link a few times... I started out a little bit earlier this morning (which translates to approximately 1 pm...) with the intent of having a "chance encounter" with some rikishi on the way to the arena. I had noticed a few lower ranking rikishi leaving after their bouts, walking down the street in their robes and sandals. Rikishi waiting at bus stops, sending SMS on their cell phones or waiting to cross the street. There is something appealing about how they blend into the cityscape. So with a little bit more time on my hands it didn't take long until I could zoom ... read more

Not much to report today. I keep having problems adjusting to GMT+8 so I tend to sleep away until noon and stay up much too late in the night to compensate. I noticed an email in my inbox informing me that my hotel booking in Kumamoto had been cancelled so I figured I might as well seek out a travel agent before heading out to the Kokusai venue. Having walked past a number of establishments the days before it wasn't quite as easy trying to remember exactly where they were. I figured I might as well have a look at that magnificent shinto temple a few blocks away as I was sure there was a travel agent around there somewhere. After some random criss-crossing of streets I decided to look for one inside the Tenjin underground ... read more
