For those of you who don't like sumo; tough luck - we're turning up the temperature a couple of degrees today, so you might as well stop reading and hit the next journal link a few times... I started out a little bit earlier this morning (which translates to approximately 1 pm...) with the intent of having a "chance encounter" with some rikishi on the way to the arena. I had noticed a few lower ra... Read Full Entry

Meh... readers beware. I originally started this log to keep my mother up to date during a longer trip, but I quickly realized I wasn't about to waste my precious time off by sitting in some shady Internet café updating a blog nobody will read anyway. Nowadays it is more of a personal nostalgia and ego thing, but by all means, feel free to enjoy the speculations and hybris which will no doubt get reality checked soon enough. I will add older travel logs as time permits.... full info

Call the winner!Call the winner!
Call the winner!

This duel ended with a disappointing call of the wrong winner. Chiyotaikai's (OzW) hand can clearly be seen touching the dohyo with Ama (KomE) still in the air. Ama was cheated of this win.

I assume that "The flying Sausage" will fail to be appended to the official list of sumo winning techniques. Especially, as it proves so well here in the fight with Kotomitsuki (OzE), it simply does not work...

Sponsormoney is a nice bonus for the winning rikishi. A little extra cash is added by sponsors for having their logo carried around the arena while the rikishi are warming up. Each kensho envelope contains 60.000 yen, 30.000 for the Sumo Association, and 30.000 for the winner. It's all in a day's work...

Yumitori-shiki, the bow ceremony

People always hurry out of the arena the second the yokozuna drops his opponent to the ground (they stay a bit longer to toss their zabuton - cushions - into the dohyo if he loses) which is a shame because the yumitori-shiki is really a spectacular performance not to be missed

Your chance picture
Hi, I was researching some Kyushu basho stuff because I want to go this year. Been everywhere else so might as well try. I came across your blog & how exciting to see your "chance picture" is with two of my best friends. They are from Onomatsu beya. On the right Kurosawa & left Keno. It is a small world afterall!! I enjoyed your pics too & I may stop by Shigenoumi's chanko place while I'm there.... but I'm usually exhausted after 8-6 of sumo every day for 15 days!!! Take care,Viki
