Well, for my first Golden Week in Japan - I'd say that it was pretty typical - Japanese style: *Made some new friends. *BBQed in the park Nihon-style, with beer, sochu, veges and sushi...then continued afterwards at an Izakaya. *BBQed in the park American-style with beer, burgers, salads and rice krispie treats. *Finally found the Great Buddah in Kamakura - with the help of some French-Canadians, their car - and of course, its GPS. *Took a million "hai - cheese" photos on a picture-perfect day. *Stubbornly attempted to speak my limited Japanese with a taxi-driver for 20 minutes in Kisarazu - searching for a non-existent ferry that crosses the bay, and an onsen with accomodation - only to end up calling my friend, staying in a business hotel, and taking a bus over on the aqualine ... read more

Hello everybody! On this day, we were invited to go strawberry-picking with some of our friends. The other people in the pictures are Elizabeth (a fellow Ariel), Missy (a friend that works behind the scenes for "Under the Sea"), and Daisuke (plays Flounder in the show!) Missy, who put the whole trip together, actually referred to the trip as "Strawberry-Hunting," which we thought was REALLY cute! After hopping into the rental car we had for the day, we drove about an hour and a half to the popular strawberry-picking grounds in Japan known as Naruto. Here, we each paid 1,000 JPY (or about $10.00) to eat ALL-YOU-CAN for a half hour. We went to town! The strawberries here were divided by row into two different types, and were absolutely the most tastiest strawberries we both had ... read more

Well, i arrived safely in Japan, Narita. The flight was great, it was about 7 to 8 hours long, and when we touched down it was about 7pm and 5 degrees outside. Bloody cold !! Compared to hot and humid Cairns. Had a couple of meals, a couple of free alcolohic drinks - hmmm Champagne, a couple of movies, Walk the line and In Her Shoes. My Cousin Troy who works in Tokyo as a teacher, met me at the Airport, after i was really confused and almost got lost ! I checked into the hotel, Narita Nikko Hotel and went up to the Bar on the top floor overlooking the Airport, it was really nice. We had a couple of beers and caught up. Then we jumped on a shuttle bus, and headed into Narita ... read more

Having feigned sleep to avoid trying to avoid pegion english conversations I finally arrived at Tokyo Narita airport. I caught the "local" train into Tokyo itself which seemed to take forever, despite it being called "Express". I walked from Tokyo station to the hotel which was in a fantastic area - very buzzy and seemingly full of restaurants, ski shops and bookstores. I headed out for a spot of lunch in a shokudo which is a cheap eating bar with fanstastically detailed plastic models of the food you were about to buy in the window. Upon entering the bar you choose your food and pay at a vending machine which serves you a token which you then use to collect your food and eat it at the counter. I had some noodles with something in them, ... read more

Hey Everyone, Today we decided to go to Asakusa, Japan which is in the heart of old Tokyo and has the most visited temple complex. We decided to be tourists and visit the Asakusa Kannon Temple and the many shops that are located around this area. When we first arrived at Kaminarimon Gate we decided to take a Rickshaw ride from Taka. It was a little weird have a man pull us around the streets like a horse, but we just relaxed and tried to stay warm. He showed us many interesting streets, shops, restaurants and history that we attempted to walk through on our own once the tour was over... One neat thing he showed us that we walked back over to see again was the famous Asakusa Kannon Temple "Senso-ji Temple". Here, we each ... read more

Well I haven't got anything extremely interesting to write for my first blog entry because all I've done since I left Cheltenham yesterday is: 1. Sit on a coach (from Cheltenham to Heathrow) 2. Sit on a plane (from Heathrow to Narita, Toyko) 3. Sit on a chair (in Narita Airport) 4. Sit on a chair (in a free internet cafe in Narita Airport) Still, at least I've found something free here. Gotta hang around until 10pm (local time) for my flight to Sydney.... read more

TRAVELBLOG ENTRY #3 January 23-February 7, 2006 Hey everyone (from Larry), I had my orientation and first week of OJT-'On The Job Training'. I had to venture into Shinjuku for my Nova orientation at the corporate office. Shinjuku is called the 'Times Square' of Tokyo, and their train station is one of the busiest in the world. I finally navigated my way to the corporate office 'what a beautiful building' and I was able to see Mt. Fuji from the floor we were on. Orientation was pretty boring, but I was able to meet a few other instructors and hopefully we'll all being going to the Sumo Tournament on February 3rd. Anyway, after our orientation we decided to go out for a few drinks at this Victorian Pub called 'Rose & Crown' and talked about where ... read more

the first leg of my flight is over (about 11 hours) and now I'm sitting in the Narita airport (near Tokyo, Japan) waiting for my flight to Bangkok. LAX was packed this morning. Tons of Texas Longhorn fans were heading back home after supporting their team at the Rose Bowl last night. I tried to congratulate every last one of them for beating USC. What a game. Vince Young of Texas was amazing. Being a UCLA fan, a loss by SC is always a good thing in my book. With the crowds, I needed every bit of the 2 hours from drop off (thanks to the Silvesters for taking me to the airport) to get to the gate. I met a cool girl in the security check point line at LAX (and a long line it ... read more

Hi All, Today I move out of the dorms and into a hostel with Jenny and Annie from the States. I have to admit that this semester has been incredible and I'm not sure if I can comprehend it being over. The past week and a half has been an interesting mix of goodbye's and traveling. It was insanely difficult to say goodbye to the Ayase ladies and for awhile it was so lonely to be the only one left in the dorm. We grew so close over the four months of living here in Tokyo and it seemed unnatural and premature to have to be separated. But then someone pointed out that it is a bit unnatural in the first place to suddenly be immersed in Japan with a bunch of strangers. We had a ... read more

On my trip to Japan, I went with two other people, Jenny and Gerard. Jenny is my roommate and Gerard is an exchange student from Spain. We really did not have a set plan on where we wanted to go, what to see, or even where to stay. We bought a Lonely Planet (a travel book) and basically lived our two week lives in Japan off of that book. One thing was for sure and that was that we were going to see as many cities as we could. We arrived in Japan in the city of Narita. From Narita we decided to head to Tokyo and stay there for a night. We ended up in Ueno, exploring that city for the night.... read more
