Jakartasta tulimme Batamin saarelle 5 tuntia myöhässä olleella AirAsia-lennolla. ... read more

hello I made it to jakarta in one piece(amazingly) the plane I was on was such a derilect p.o.s, rumour has it that once the planes in N.america are unsafe to fly, the give them to russia, then the russians give them to africa, and when they are to unsafe to fly in africa they are given to indonesia, the plane I was on was no exeption. frist off, the extieriour was rusting in some places, the interior was yellowed with age, seats had gashes in them, and the t.v closest to me screen was smashed out. How i dont know, when we going for take off, it seemed that every crack in the runway that we went over felt like we were driving over a lindmine, during the flight, a strange ratteling sound was coming ... read more

Hi all Well its been almost a week since I have last updated and again its been due to lack of being connected due to being in remote locations which has been wonderful. Last Saturday evening we met up with the group of people who were being added to our group for the second week of our tour. So this week we have 2 female Aussies, 1 male American, 1 male Slovakian, 1 female from Hong Kong and 1 female from Ireland and we lost the American from last week. There are a few more young people (well 35 +) then last week which has been good. On Sunday we were on the boat to Lombok which is one of the poorest islands in Indonessia. We were told the boat would take between 4 and 7 ... read more

Ok, I havn't been able to write a blog for a week now so this will be a long blog, coupled with the fact that im not sure what day i did what on should make it interesting. On friday night we went to a bar. We played jenga for a bit and listened to an indonesian band play english songs. This was quite amusing as alot of the words were incorrect. Then suddenly I relised that the football draw for the champions league was being drawn so i got the bar to change the channel to see liverpool had drawn arsenal, which pleased me greatly, oh and possibly chelsea in the semis which will be even better :-). On a side note i've tried my best to do alot of research on who people in ... read more

Udon Thani to Gili Trawangan was not easy. From Udon Thani, an overnight sleeper train to Bangkok. The next day a flight (delayed) to Jakarta, Indonesia. We had an overnight layover, followed by an afternoon flight (delayed) to Bali. We arrived late, had another overnight layover, and another flight (delayed) to Mataram on Lombok. On Lombok we arranged a taxi to the port and then a boat to Gili Trawangan. We arrived in a heavy rainstorm, with our rainjackets tied over our rucksacks to try to keep them dry and light we walked in ankle deep water down the middle of the street until we found accomodations that would allow a couple of tired and drenched weary travellers. Phew. 4 days, 3 flights, 3 delays, 1 train, 1 bus, 1 boat, 7 taxis, 1 rainstorm. Priceless? ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Java » Bogor March 20th 2008

Bogoriin tulimme vanhasta tottumuksesta suoraan Jakartan lentokentältä Damri-bussilla. Muutaman tunnin kiertelyn jälkeen Helenan johtama etsintäryhmä vihdoin... read more

After Borneo, we had one night in Kuala Lumpor (KL) (it didn't rain! woohoo!) and then headed for Melacca for a few days. This is a town about 2 hours South of KL and on the way to Singapore. We stayed in a guest house run by a crazy lady and just chilled out for a few days, there wasn't much else to do! We went to Singapore on 23rd March (ish) and stayed in a very expensive hostel (by our standards!). Singapore is an expensive place to stay and explore. We went to the zoo, which is absolutely huuuge, the aquarium and dolphin show which are on an island on the South of Singapore called Sentosa Island (they nicked loads of sand from Indonesia to make it). The island is really tacky and is basically ... read more

We left India on 15th February, taking a night flight from Mumbai to Bangkok. Our last sight of India was the evening taxi journey from downtown Mumbai to the airport. The centre of Mumbai is a thriving international city with all the trappings of wealth and growth. As we got further from the centre the landscape changed. We drove through roads where makeshift homes had been erected on the street; sheets of tarpaulin spread across bamboo poles providing homes to whole families. Occasionally you could get a glimpse inside one of these homes, where surprisingly domestic life is maintained inches from the thundering traffic - clothes hung on makeshift clothes rails, people preparing an evening meal and, somewhat incongrously, gathered round a flickering tv screen. We were passing through one the slums of Mumbai, where people ... read more

The trains are quite nice from Jakarta 3 hours to the city of Bogor. I opted for the air conditioned business class train so I could avoid the desperatly packed ekonomi (economy) trains. "Welcome to City of Rain" someone greeted me as I arrived in Bogor. He's right, I've read that Bogor is credited with 320 thunderstorms per years making it the rainiest city in Indonesia. He wanted to lead me into a tourist information centre to probably try and sell me a tour so I made up an excuse saying that my friends were waiting for me. He asked if they were from France, I told him Canada and he got confused saying that there are no Canadians here, just two french people. I find that hard to believe in a city of 600 000. ... read more
