Today we leave the tidy confines of the Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua for the more real view of Bali. Our driver, another Gooday (this is a family name so this will be 1 of 4 that we meet in 3 days) who promptly picked us up to travel to the Lake Batur area. If we were going straight there, it would only be a couple of hours, but we will check out a few sites along the way, which may make for a long day. Driving north we drove through Denpasar (the largest city in Bali), Sanur (beach town) and finally Ubud (made famous by Eat, Pray, Love) before finally starting to see glimpses of greenery. It was shop after shop of real life needs (tires, food, electrical, etc) and tourist stuff, which made us wonder...who buys ... read more

After our much needed sleep, we had to be up bright and early to catch an Outrigger catamaran to Nusa Penida, an island off the southern coast of Bali. Paige and I had done some research and the views on Penida were reported as awesome. Our taxi was coming at 645, so we did a quick stop at the Hyatt Club for some food and coffee, before heading to the port which was only 15 minutes away. Nusa Dua, where our hotel is located, is very manicured and the visuals are carefully managed. Similar to Hilton Head, Cancun or Hawaiian tourist areas, it is beautiful but feels like you could be in any beautiful beach resort area in the world. No matter, it was a great way to ease into the real Bali, which we would ... read more

Welcome to another Ken and Jenine Adventure in Bali Indonesia. We are excited that for a portion of the trip, Ken’s daughter Paige is joining us! I am going to put several days into one, as the flight to Denpasar, Bali is long and with time changes does span 3 days. One thing that was very odd, was that we left at midnight on Tuesday, December 17, a time where we are normally snoozing in our comfy bed. The first leg was to Hong Kong, and clocked in at a hefty 14.5 hours. We arrived at 6am on Thursday, December 19 and had 4.5 hours to find our way around the massive Hong Kong Airport. The next leg to Bali was 5 hours, so after approx. 24 hours of travel we landed in Bali. Paige had ... read more

When Indonesians talk about the size of their country, they always mention two names, Sabang and Merauke, the two extremities of the country. I was in Merauke last year, the eastern most point of Indonesia, and now I have been to Sabang, the western most point. In actual fact I haven't been to the uttermost ends of either of the two. There are monuments at both places, at Merauke it is on the border with Papua New Guinea, and I didn't go there. On Pulau Weh, of which Sabang is the main town, it is on the western most cape, and I didn't go there either. But I would say I have been close enough to both. Let's say I have been to the uttermost ends of Indonesia, give or take 50 kilometers. I think that's ... read more

Indonesia has a bit of a plastic problem. I don't normally talk about it in my blogs, and if you would look at my pictures you might not expect it. But plastic is literally chocking up the rivers, polluting the jungles, and clogging the seas of this country. And every now and again I get confronted with this fact. Mostly I try to ignore it. I try to ignore the people throwing their plastic bags, bottles, cups and whatever else out of the bus, car or boat. I try to look the other way when seeing the side of the roads littered with plastic, I frame my pictures in such a way that you don't see all that I see! But that doesn't mean it isn't there!! It is, always, everywhere. I cycled around Samosir Island ... read more

Luego bajar a Uluwatu.
