Let's just start by saying we loved it here and could easily have stayed longer than the three nights we had. To say Lake Toba and Samsomir Island is beautiful is a vast understatement. I believe Lake Tabo is the largest lake created by a volcanic eruption way back when, and I believe too that it is incredibly deep - don't you just love the scientific accuracy - but someone told me so. What I do know for sure is that it is huge, clean, and warm, cause I tested it myself when I went for a swim, and it was about the same temperature as the swimming pool. Surrounded by lush green mountain ridges and coloured with the uniquely designed Batak houses, it has a very definite charm. But equally charming is the fact that ... read more

As the name suggests, Resort Latitude Zero sits within spitting distance of the equator. A hedonistic oasis, the resort is snuggled cosily amongst the Telo Island chain. The what chain? If you are not a surfer, it's an archipelago incognito. Even the good people of Sumatra, a couple of hundred kilometres to the west, would struggle to point it out on a map. That resonated of a decent enough reason to call in for a fortnight. This was my second visit to the ballpark but Telo Island Lodge, while upscale in a surfer kind of way, isn't the genre of place to drag the blushing bride. Not so RLZ. The brainchild of a group of Oz surfers, what they have created from the foundations up in this off the grid locale is a cocktail of vision, ... read more

I believe our guide told us there are over one hundred and sixty volcanoes in Indonesia, several of which are found in Sumatra. According to Lonely Planet, the two most accessible in Sumatra - Sibayak and Sinabulu - found in Northern Sumatra, attract the majority of volcanoe seekers here. However, our guide informed us that hiking Sinabulu is not allowed, because the climb is very dangerous, and because of the possibility of the volcanoe erupting. I'm no expert, but when we passed by Sinabulu on a clear day, that steady flow of smoke clearing coming from the top of the mountain looked pretty ominous and live-volcano like to me. But I digress. We climbed Sibayak. For us, it wasn't so much about the climb - or we might have considered the full day hike. It was ... read more

After twelve hours in transit from Bangkok to Medan, Sumatra, we arrive in evening darkness into completely different energy than we left behind in the developed high rise beach resort that we had stayed at for two weeks. We are once again in the land of many many people, family excursions of four on one motorbike, buses choking fumes, truckloads of chickens, and cars all competing for road space on poorly maintained dusty roads, lined on each side by brightly lit food and merch stalls late into the night. For a moment it felt like being back in India or Sri Lanka again, which in itself was exciting, but then we turned off our very busy street and arrived at our destination, into an oasis of fairy lights and solitude, and in the morning woke up ... read more

"Excuse me mam. Excuse me sir. Would it be possible for me to speak with you please"?A question of that nature, right or wrong, immediately launches Penny and myself into defensive autopilot. There's an almost intrinsic assumption that the enquirer wants to procure something from us we don't want to hand over. Ever the foreign the diplomat, I'll always suspiciously oblige; "Sure. What is it you want to talk about"?" Excuse me sir. I am a student and just wish to practice my English". That usually translates to one of two things;(A) He wants to practice his English via a sales pitch, or(B) He actually is a student wanting to practice his English. Waddya know, this fellow was from group B. In fact this most respectful and polite young man, along with his 14 likeminded cohorts ... read more

Geo: -7.83075, 112.697I arrived in Medan and got a local bus out to my hostel in town which took around one hour, I've stayed here before so I know the owners and some others that are around. I contacted my friend Elly who has been looking after my bike in her home in Bukit Lawang and I'm pleased that she will be down in Medan in the morning so I do the return trip with her back to the jungle. The journey takes around 5 hours so it's great having some company along the way, I explained to her my change of plans and that I'm going to take the bike back over to Thailand and meet back up with Drew and Malmuirie. We have a great catch up along the way and it is nice to ... read more

I visited Sumatra a week ago, and it was amazing. I got plenty of opportunities to practice Bahasa Indonesia (the local language) with the people in Medan. Medan is a city with an international airport, and it's the biggest city outside Java in Indonesia. I arrived at 9am, in the city and proceeded to explore. I was disenchanted, mostly because I live in a city in Java, and wanted to see some greenery, rather than the grey buildings and smoke that epitomise an Indonesian city. I stayed a night in a 3* hotel (for about 3 pounds sterling, and I haggled a free breakfast in too!) and went on to Bukit Lawang the following morning. I got a bumpy 3 hour bus ride out of the way, and arrived in a village next to the jungle! ... read more
