Got up late today. I decided it would be a good idea to hire mountain bikes, not so sure Rob would associate the word good with it :p Bikes were much better than the ones we had in Pai with gears, seat adjusted to correct height and working brakes. We cycled for about an hour going through a Batak village with cool little wooden Batak houses, past forest and saw some good views over the lake. We found it hard work due to the fact we're unfit and there were some hilly bits :p It started to rain, just spitting at first but as we turned to go back it chucked it down! We still really enjoyed flying down the big hill on the way back though even though we were drenched. When we got back ... read more

Spent another day playing games; badminton, hoopla, pool and shooting hoops. Spoke to a guy at our GH from London who had been working as an Editor on the Jakarta Globe newspaper, seemed a very interesting character. Wandered to Tabo Cottages for my hit of Diet Coke and a few rounds (I say this loosely) of table tennis. Spoke to some kids, had a sweaty photo taken and saw 3 gorgeous Andrex pups. In the evening a couple put "The Hangover" on so we part watched that while playing chess and dominoes then Rob put on "310 to Yuma" - we haven't had a TV since coming to Sumatra so we're enjoying watching it a bit :p Got chatting to the other couple, John and Jean, who were from London originally but had studied and were ... read more

Felt much better on waking up today. Went to cheapo cafe (set to become our regular haunt) for breakfast, really overcast this morn, even a few spots of rain :0 so I had a hot cuppa to warm up (we're higher up again here so it's cooler anyway). Wandered around Tuk Tuk which is quite a nice little place. This part is a little tourist village and it consists of a long winding road which runs alongside the lake and is full of souvenir shops, cafes, bookshops.... Sun came out and it started to get really warm so we stopped off at Reggae for a drink as it had really good views over the lake. Walk took us about 2hrs. Back at our GH we wandered down to the lake, had a go on the swings, ... read more

We arrived alive, phew! And the journey took 4hrs less than we expected so we were happy :) We arrived in Parapet just after 7.30am and were so lucky that a couple from Padang (going on holiday to lake Toba) took us under their wings and told us where we should get off and got an opulet for the 4 of us to take us to the ferry, they were very sweet and even refused money for the opulet ride. The boat dropped us off at the jetty right next to our guest house (Bagus Bay). On walking down a group of kids asked if they could practice their English with us. So we answered questions for about 10mins and had the obligatory photo take (there is going to be a lot of photos doing the ... read more

On our trip so far we have had a few long, tiring overnight bus journeys but none can compare to the sheer horror of the 5pm coach to Parapat, on the edge of Lake Toba. Ulrich, our Basil Fawlty like hotel owner, had warned us of huge delays and cranes that stay at one particular spot to pull out the coaches from the bog. Waiting at the bus stop we saw enough damaged coaches to leave us with a little lump in the throat as we boarded ours. The signs were good though as the seats were relatively comfortable, the air-con worked and the bus looked clean. It even had an on-board toilet. This good will, however, was to last about as long as an England World Cup campaign. Not an hour had passed before things ... read more
