The first thing they should tell you upon entering the jungle is that you will never stop sweating. So far this has been true for me, and it started when I took my seat on that bus, 4 stinky hours before I even arrived. My first morning in Bukit, I awoke to a desperate Cucumber banging on my door, insisting I wake up that very second. I grumbled and fumbled my way out of my mosquito net, and opened the door to the tiny Indonesian man jumping up and down, pointing at the river. "Sasa! You so lucky! You see Sasa first morning!" And there, a short distance away from my balcony, sat Sasa, the sassy orangutan, enjoying some morning refreshment. Most travellers venture to Bukit Lawang for exactly this reason, to view these hairy friends ... read more

We got to Penang in Malaysia only to find that the ferry company had gone bankrupt. So we had to fly, at considerable expense to Indonesia. But enough whinging. We got to Medan and spent a night there as the flight was so delayed we couldn't get a bus anywhere. So for four pounds we got a room not far off a jail cell, but with some other inhabitants. Most of them insects. We're now in Bukit Lawang, on the edge of the rainforest, and we have today had a really great day! We went trekking in the jungles and saw quite a few Orangutans and gibbons. Jungle trekking is a bit different to mountain trekking. It brought back memories of Rwanda in many ways, except you get much closer to the Orangutans than the mountain gorillas. ... read more

Woke up to the sound of monkeys bouncing on our roof :) Didn't mind too much though as we had to get up early anyway to go to the orangutan feeding platform (http://www.orangutans-sos.org/visit_sumatra/bohorok_orangutan_centre/). Walked down to dug out canoe at 8 and saw an orangutan waiting nearby. After we crossed he used the rope pulley system to get over the river :) It's only a short walk but has lots of big steps so we were a little out of puff when we got there, one guide made us laugh when he said 'we do this everyday, it's killing us', the way he said it with a deadpan face reminded us of English humour. It was well worth the money we paid (20,000 each for permit and 50,000 for camera; we only paid for 1 camera ... read more

The alarm went off at 7am and roused us from our sleepytime. Today we got to do what we came to Sumatra to do in the first place; see Orangutans in the wild. After breakfast in the cafe we got picked up by one of the guides and taken to some housing in the village where our other guide was getting out of bed and getting dressed. When they had both readied themselves and bought supplies for the trek (breakfast, fruit and fags) we headed off. First we went through some rubber plantations on the edge of the national park, where we saw how the trees are cut and bled for the rubber. After that we passed a sign to say we were entering the national park and we were soon in jungle. Suse immediately spotted ... read more

Me and Rob spent last night sleeping in a single bed as my mattress felt like a bag of rocks. Rob's seemed to have no springs and he just sunk into the middle of it leaving me to lay on a sort of mattress hill at the edge. It was mighty hot too with just a piddly fan in the room that you couldn't angle. Other highlights include it being ridiculously small with just enough room for a bed, the toilet had no seat and no flush, no sink and the whole room smelt of sick, even the towel! We couldn't wait to get outta there so as soon as we woke up we had a shower and went down for breakfast. The breakfast here is a bit pricey. I had jam and toast, tea and ... read more

We were kinda glad to be leaving Railey after our not so perfect last day. We hopped into a tourist minivan and headed for the Thai boarder and Malaysia. We sat next to some Malaysian people who were SO friendly, we think Malays should win the most friendly country award (not Thailand!). We arrived in Georgetown on Penang Island very late. Luckily our bus driver dropped us where we requested rather than dumping us at an out of town bus station. We checked into the guest house we'd found on Travel Fish and pre-booked only to find we had the last room and it was a horrible damp windowless cell. Doh! Internet lies. We stayed there for one night and moved to somewhere nicer and cheaper in the morning where we had to get all our ... read more

Upon stepping down from our coach from Danu Toba-Medan we were pounced upon by a chirpy fellow who shepherded us from opelet to opelet, dazzling us with his English football knowledge as we went: "I think Walcott on left...yes...and Ben Foster very good...but attack is problem...what if Rooney injured?" We normally prefer to find our own way but this chap was very insistent, passing us to meet his 'friend' Yetno, who just happened to be a trekking guide in Bukit Lawang. We were slightly frustrated at the situation and prospect of discussing a trek with some guy we had just met, but on the whole after 10 hrs travelling we were just pleased to be at our destination. It was dark when we arrived and we were just attempting to squeeze our wide loads over the ... read more

Warning: This blog entry is excessively long and detailed as this was quite possibly my favorite experience ever, so I have literally recorded everything in an attempt to re-live it. Unfortunately it doesn’t work like that, so skim-read and enjoy the best of the ridiculous amount of photos we took. So after getting a semi decent night’s sleep, with the calls to prayer waking everybody up at about 4am in the morning, we went down to breakfast where we nervously waited to see whether our guide would actually turn up and wondering how strenuous the day ahead would turn out to be. The main attraction in Bukit Lawang is the Orangutans; it is one of only two places in the world (the other being Borneo) where you can see Orangutans in the wild. There is a ... read more
